Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to unsettled levels on September 6. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 347 and 444 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to active levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at 1.3 pfu at the end of the day.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 248.9 - decreasing 42.2 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 174.77. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 174.77 on March 8, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 5.8). Three hour interval K indices: 00133012 (planetary), 10223322 (Boulder), 10133024 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C3 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 18 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 437) and in 15 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 283) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13806 [S11W51] decayed slowly and produced numerous C flares.
AR 13808 [S10W42] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13809 [S22W45] reemerged with tiny spots.
AR 13810 [N17W46] reemerged with tiny spots.
AR 13811 [S11W06] gained spots and could produce M flares.
AR 13813 [S22E10] developed in the intermediate spot section and produced a few C flares.
AR 13814 [N15E52] was mostly quiet and stable.
New AR 13815 [S27E24] rotated into view on September 2 and was numbered 4 days later by SWPC. The spot group has a fairly simple magnetic layout.
New AR 13816 [S10E19] emerged on September 5 and developed slowly the next day as it was numbered by SWPC.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10066 [N23W66] was quiet and stable.
S10076 [S10W22] decayed slowly and quietly.
S10086 [N12E06] decayed slowly and quietly.
S10095 [N20E01] was quiet and stable.
S10096 [N16E39] was quiet and stable.
S10097 [S12E53] developed slowly and quietly.
New region S10098 [N04E20] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.
New region S10099 [S08E72] rotated into view with a tiny spot.
New region S10100 [N20W35] emerged with tiny spots.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

September 4-6: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.

Coronal holes

A positive polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1240) was in an Earth facing position on September 3-4.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at mostly quiet on September 7-9 with a chance of unsettled intervals on September 7-8 due to weak effects from CH1240.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of September 7, 2024

Sunspot counts in August 2024 were much higher than during any previous solar cycle 25 month. In comparison only 3 months during solar cycle 23 had higher SSN. Sunspot counts in early September are still high, although lower than in the beginning of August. With at least 5 consecutive months of high sunspot counts the projected peak for the smoothed ISN (365 days smoothing) has increased significantly to above 160 and could easily surpass 170 if the current activity lasts through October. The month of the peak is likely to occur sometime between July and November 2024.
