Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels on November 10. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 479 and 612 km/sec, averaging 543 km/sec (-20 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes was at quiet to unsettled levels most of the day and ended the day with a major storm interval in response to the arrival of the above mentioned disturbance. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels until 09:50 UT. Then protons associated with the X1 flare in Ar 14274 arrived and the above 10 MeV proton flux peaked at 30.9 pfu at 15:00 UT.

Solar flux density measured at 18h UT on 2.8 GHz was 170.8 - increasing 16.4 over the previous solar rotation. The measurements at 20 and 22h UT were both flare enhanced, thus using the measurement at 18h UT.

The 365 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 159.61 (183 days ago). The 81 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 153.3 (41 days ago, this is 53.3% of the total SC25 solar flux range from the max 81 day average peak on September 4, 2024 at 227.3 and an average 81 day flux of 69 at solar minimum). SC25 365d peak: 195.9 on October 13, 2024.

The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 13 (STAR Ap - based on the average of three hour interval ap indices: 13.1). Three hour interval K indices: 32123433 (planetary), 22113432 (Boulder), 52014446 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 19).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 15 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 380) and in 10 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 209) SDO/HMI images.

AR 14272 [N21W41] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14274 [N24W22] was the source of an X1 proton event and nearly all other flares recorded during the day. The leading and trailing spot sections appears to be approaching each other making the region even more compact. Further X flares are likely. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 00:15, C1.3 @ 00:52, C1.8 @ 06:19, C1.9 @ 08:16, C1.9 @ 19:00, C1.9 @ 19:39, C1.9 @ 23:58 UT
AR 14275 [N07W22] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14276 [S16E10] has polarity intermixing and could produce a minor M flare. The trailing spot section decayed. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 01:18 UT
AR 14277 [S06E11] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 14278 [N11E07] was quiet and stable.
AR 14279 [S12E44] was quiet and stable.
New AR 14280 [S08E62] rotated into view on November 9 and was numbered the next day by SWPC.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
AR S11589 [S14W34] was quiet and stable.
AR S11590 [N19W08] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR S11591 [N14E19] reemerged with tiny spots.
New AR S11594 [N17W13] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.
New AR S11596 [S07E38] emerged with tiny spots.
New AR S11597 [S23W13] emerged with a tiny spot.
New AR S11598 [S32E18] emerged with a tiny spot.

Minor update added at 10:30 UT: AR 14274 was the source of an X5.1 flare at 10:04 UT. This was another proton event and even the above 500 MeV proton flux is increasing rapidly as I write this. It's too early to tell if there was a CME, although the presence of a CME will be no surprise given the history of AR 14274.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

November 8: No obvious CMEs were observed in available coronograph imagery.
November 9: A bright, nearly symmetric full halo CME was observed after the major X1.7 flare in AR 14274. The CME will likely reach Earth on November 11.
November 10: A full halo CME was observed after the X1.2 proton event in AR 14274. The CME will likely reach Earth sometime between late on November 11 and the early afternoon on November 12.

Coronal holes

A small southern hemisphere negative polarity coronal hole (CH1329) rotate across the central meridian on November 10 and decayed slowly. A northern hemisphere negative polarity coronal hole (CH1330) could become Earth facing on November 13.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at minor to severe storm levels starting from the first CME impact on November 11 and lasting at least until November 13 due to CME effects.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of October 2025

Sunspot activity was on a decreasing trend from September 2024 until mid August 2025 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy). Then a strong surge in activity saw solar flux peak in late August 2025 just below the largest peaks seen in 2024. A slow decrease in activity from the August level has been observed in September and October 2025.

All 365 day smoothed sunspot numbers reached a maximum on October 11-12, 2024
. This became the peak of SC25 (365 day smoothed peaks: STAR 1K: 236.1, STAR 2K: 364.3, NOAA SN: 156.0, ISN: 163.9), while the 365d smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, just 1.7% below the SC23 peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
