Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to major storm levels on November 8. The second of the 2 full halo CMEs on November 5 reached Earth just before midnight UT on November 7 and caused a disturbance that lasted most of the day. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 602 and 709 km/sec, averaging 653 km/sec (-116 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded unsettled to severe storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels all day.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 171.9 - increasing 29.4 over the previous solar rotation.

The 365 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 159.83 (183 days ago). The 81 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 152.2 (41 days ago, this is 52.6% of the total SC25 solar flux range from the max 81 day average peak on September 4, 2024 at 227.3 and an average 81 day flux of 69 at solar minimum). SC25 365d peak: 195.9 on October 13, 2024.

The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 35 (STAR Ap - based on the average of three hour interval ap indices: 34.6). Three hour interval K indices: 65644432 (planetary), 56643321 (Boulder), 76544443 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 19).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 13 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 348) and in 12 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 229) SDO/HMI images.

AR 14272 [N21W14] was mostly quiet and stable.
AR 14273 [S13W50] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14274 [N24E02] produced many C flares. At 07:35 on November 9 an X1.7 flare was recorded. This event was associated with a fairly dense, asymmetric full halo CME. Further X flares are possible. C1 flares: C1.9 @ 00:17, C1.9 @ 00:30, C1.5 @ 00:44, C1.6 @ 01:05, C1.8 @ 04:08, C1.5 @ 04:41, C1.5 @ 04:48, C1.7 @ 05:32, C1.9 @ 07:40, C1.7 @ 08:46, C1.8 @ 10:58, C1.6 @ 11:14, C1.5 @ 11:33, C1.5 @ 12:32, C1.5 @ 13:29, C1.4 @ 19:56, C1.4 @ 20:18, C1.7 @ 20:46, C1.6 @ 21:21, C1.7 @ 00:03 (flare started at 23:58) UT
AR 14275 [N07E04] was mostly quiet and stable.
AR 14276 [S17E39] was mostly quiet and stable. C1 flares: C1.6 @ 09:23, C1.7 @ 12:06 UT
AR 14277 [S06E38] developed a tiny magnetic delta in the central spot section. An M flare is possible. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 05:04, C1.9 @ 05:13 UT
AR 14278 [N11E34] was quiet and stable.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

November 6, 8: No obvious CMEs were observed in available coronograph imagery.
November 7: A faint asymmetric full halo CME was observed after a long duration M1 event in AR 14274. This CME could reach Earth on November 10.
November 9: A relatively dense, asymmetric, full halo CME was observed after the major X1.7 flare in AR 14274 at 07:35 UT. The CME could reach Earth either late on November 10 or on November 11.

Coronal holes

A recurrent negative polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1328) rotated across the central meridian on November 3-6. A small southern hemisphere negative polarity coronal hole (CH1329) could rotate across the central meridian on November 10. A northern hemisphere negative polarity coronal hole (CH1330) could become Earth facing on November 13.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to active levels on November 9 and quiet to severe storm levels on November 10-11 due to effects from multiple CMEs.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of October 2025

Sunspot activity was on a decreasing trend from September 2024 until mid August 2025 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy). Then a strong surge in activity saw solar flux peak in late August 2025 just below the largest peaks seen in 2024. A slow decrease in activity from the August level has been observed in September and October 2025.

All 365 day smoothed sunspot numbers reached a maximum on October 11-12, 2024
. This became the peak of SC25 (365 day smoothed peaks: STAR 1K: 236.1, STAR 2K: 364.3, NOAA SN: 156.0, ISN: 163.9), while the 365d smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, just 1.7% below the SC23 peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
