
The geomagnetic field was at active to minor storm levels on October 12 under the influence of effects associated with CH1322. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 537 and 797 km/sec, averaging 703 km/sec (+266 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded active to major storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels all day.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was
142.5 -
increasing 12.6
over the previous solar rotation.
The 365 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 165.35 (183 days ago). The 81 day
average solar flux at 1 AU was 154.7 (41 days ago, this is 54.2% of the total SC25 solar flux range from the max 81
day average peak on September 4, 2024 at 227.3 and an average 81 day flux of
69 at solar minimum).
SC25 365d peak:
195.9 on October 13, 2024.
The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 29 (STAR Ap - based on the average of three hour interval ap indices: 29.1). Three hour interval K indices: 44444454 (planetary), 43334454 (Boulder), 55544565 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 19).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 11 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 268) and in 11 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 206) SDO/HMI images.
AR 14246 [N22W13] gained spots and area. The
region has an east-west inversion line and was by a large margin the most
active flare produced on the visible disk. C1 flares: C1.0 @ 00:28, C1.1 @
01:51, C1.5 @ 02:46, C1.2 @ 03:09, C1.0 @ 06:30, C1.6 @ 10:43, C1.4 @ 10:51,
C1.4 @ 12:29, C1.9 @ 12:36, C1.8 @ 12:46 UT
AR 14247 [S12W50] decayed losing area and was mostly quiet. C1.
flares: C1.0 @ 10:28 UT
AR 14248 [N06E21] was mostly quiet and stable. Note that SWPC/USAF
made a mistake and swapped region numbers on October 12 for this AR and AR
14250. The original numbering will be kept here for data consistency and
integrity reasons.
AR 14249 [S20E26] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14250 [N07E14] developed quickly and could produce a major flare.
C1 flares: C1.9 @ 11:22 UT
New AR 14251 [N18E40] emerged on October 10 and was numbered by SWPC
2 days later.
New AR 14252 [S14E66] rotated into view on October 11 and received
its NOAA number the next day.
New AR 14253 [S17W09] emerged on October 11 and developed further
early on October 12. Slow decay was observed after noon.
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
New AR S11518 [S23E41] emerged with tiny spots.
New AR S11519 [N08W18] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage
area.
New AR S11520 [N10E57] emerged with tiny spots.
AR S11504 behind the northwest limb produced a C1.7 flare at 12:07 UT

October 11: A faint and slow CME originating from near AR 14246 was
observed early in the day. The CME could reach Earth late on October 14.

A recurrent negative polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1322) rotated across the central meridian on October 7-10.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to minor storm levels on October 13 due to effects associated with CH1322. Quiet to unsettled is likely on October 14-15 until the arrival of the October 11 CME after which unsettled to minor storm levels are likely.

Sunspot activity has been on a decreasing trend since September
2024 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy).
Compared to the peak of SC25 solar flux has been at a low level in both May
and June 2025. Taking a closer look at the 81 day (3 solar rotations)
average solar flux proxy, its peak was in early September 2024 and had on
May 12 decreased to less than half of the solar cycle flux range.
Subtracting the 81 day average of approximately 69 at solar cycle minimum
from all measurements, the SC25 range is 0 - 158.3.
All 365 day smoothed sunspot numbers peaked on October 11-12, 2024,
very likely making this the peak of SC25 (365 day smoothed peaks: STAR 1K: 236.1, STAR 2K: 364.3, NOAA SN: 156.0, ISN: 163.9). The 365d
smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, just 1.7% below the SC23
peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
