Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to severe storm levels on September 12 under the influence of effects from the September 10 CME. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 389 and 645 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to severe storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at 0.7 pfu at the end of the day.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 201.2 - decreasing 23.7 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 175.65. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 175.65 on March 13, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 72 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 72.4). Three hour interval K indices: 24577675 (planetary), 23566563 (Boulder), 43556475 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class M1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 14 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 267) and in 11 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 182) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13813 [S24W66] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13814 [N15W27] decayed slowly and still has a magnetic delta configuration. M class flares are still possible.
AR 13815 [S26W55] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13816 [S09W66] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13822 [N14W18] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 13823 [S17W76] decayed slowly and could become spotless before rotating out of view,
AR 13824 [S04E14] matured and produced several C flares.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10096 [N15W43] was quiet and stable.
S10107 [S18W07] was quiet and stable.
New region S10108 [S16E78] rotated into view before noon and is a compact and complex spot group. The region was unstable and further major flares are possible.
New region S10109 [S14E02] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.
New region S10110 [N13E09] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S10111 [S12W37] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S10112 [N09W59] emerged with a tiny spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

September 10: A partial halo CME was observed mostly off the northern hemisphere limbs and the north pole following a long duration M class event in AR 13814 early in the day.
September 11-12
: No obviously Earth directed CMEs observed.

A southern hemisphere positive polarity coronal hole (CH1241) will rotate into an Earth facing position on September 12-13. CH1241 may be too far to the south to cause a geomagnetic disturbance.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to minor storm on September 13 due to CME effects and quiet to unsettled on September 14-15.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of September 7, 2024

Sunspot counts in August 2024 were much higher than during any previous solar cycle 25 month. In comparison only 3 months during solar cycle 23 had higher SSN. Sunspot counts in early September are still high, although lower than in the beginning of August. With at least 5 consecutive months of high sunspot counts the projected peak for the smoothed ISN (365 days smoothing) has increased significantly to above 160 and could easily surpass 170 if the current activity lasts through October. The month of the peak is likely to occur sometime between July and November 2024.
