Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to major storm levels on August 17. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to major storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels at the end of the day. A solar wind shock was observed arriving at SOHO at 13:29 UT, the arrival of the August 14 CME.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 229.5 - increasing 22.1 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 169.78. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 169.78 on February 17, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 27 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 26.6). Three hour interval K indices: 10113655 (planetary), 10234645 (Boulder), 21214645 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C3 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 16 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 376) and in 13 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 236) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13784 [N16W44] lost a few spots. The magnetic delta configuration decayed further. Only a few flares were recorded, however, an increase in activity was observed early on August 18.
AR 13785 [S14W35] gained area in the southern spot sections and lost spots in the northern spot sections .
AR 13786 [S22W81] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 13788 [S07W20] was mostly quiet and stable.
AR 13789 [N27W13] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13790 [S11E49] developed slowly and produced several C and M flares.
AR 13791 [S18E35] was quiet and stable.
AR 13792 [S17E60] was quiet and stable.
New AR 13793 [N22E48] emerged on August 16 and developed further on August 17 when the spot group was numbered by SWPC.
New AR 13794 [N18E29] emerged on August 17 and received its NOAA number the next day.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10026 [N15E05] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S10028 [S03E03] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S10029 [S03E81] rotated into view with several spots. M class flaring is possible.
New region S10030 [N03E82] rotated into view with tiny spots.
New region S10031 [N23E58] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.
New region S10032 [S24E18] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

August 15-17: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.

Coronal holes

A recurrent negative polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1235) rotated across the central meridian on August 13-15, however, it is likely too far to the north to cause any significant disturbance. A positive polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1236) could rotate into an Earth facing position on August 18-20.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels on August 18 due to lingering effects from the August 14 CME. Quiet conditions are likely on August 19-20. Quiet to active is possible on August 21-23 due to effects from CH1236.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of August 12, 2024

Sunspot counts in July 2024 were the highest we've seen for a single month during solar cycle 25. The first part of August has seen very high sunspot counts, and there more than a remote possibility that we'll see activity in August approaching the most active months of solar cycle 23. With at least 4 consecutive months of high sunspot counts the projected peak for the smoothed ISN (365 days smoothing) has increased significantly to above 160. The month of the peak is currently likely to occur sometime between July and November 2024.
