Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet on February 1. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 363 and 453 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to unsettled levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at 0.6 pfu at the end of the day, slowly decreasing. A weak solar wind shock was observed at 05:18 UT at DSCOVR, likely the arrival of the January 29 CME.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 136.9 - decreasing 15.8 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 157.03. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 158.71 on June 27, 2023). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 5 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 4.8). Three hour interval K indices: 11221121 (planetary), 11221221 (Boulder), 30010333 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B8 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 16 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 302) and in 13 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 195) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13565 [N06E12] displayed slow decay and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 20:09, C1.1 @ 22:36 UT
Region 13567 [N19E35] decayed quickly and produced only low level C flares. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 03:57, C1.3 @ 12:16, C1.0 @ 12:56, C1.0  @ 14:17, C1.6 @ 14:48, C1.3 @ 18:52 UT
Region 13568 [S09W62] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13569 [S13W22] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region 13570 [S03E48] emerged on January 30 and was numbered 2 days later by SWPC as slow development continued.
New region 13571 [S17E64] rotated into view on January 31 with SWPC numbering the region the following day. C1 flares: C1.6 @ 10:41, C1.3 @ 11:31, C1.0 @ 17:16, C1.1 @ 21:06 UT
New region 13572 [S12E22] emerged on January 31 and was assigned its NOAA number the next day as the region began to decay.
New region 13573 [N22E08] emerged with several spots early in the day.
New region 13574 [N15E72] rotated into view with a few spots. C1 flares: C1.0 @ 06:12 UT

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9366 [N21W07] was mostly quiet and stable.
S9371 [S06W08] was mostly quiet and stable. C1 flares: C1.0 @ 22:15 UT
S9385 [N19W52] was quiet and stable.
S9391 [S36W11] developed slowly and has many tiny spots.
New region S9394 [N23E04] emerged with tiny spots just west of AR 13573.
New region S9395 [N27E19] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S9396 [S14W14] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

January 30 - February 1: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.

Coronal holes

A positive polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1201) will be Earth facing on February 1-2.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on February 2-4. Some unsettled intervals are possible on February 5 due to effects from CH1201.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of January 3, 2024

The relatively low solar activity during the last months of 2023 significantly increased the possibility that solar cycle 25 has already peaked. Whether the first peak in June 2023 will be the actual solar max will not be known for some time. Due to the relatively high solar activity early in 2023 it is unlikely there will be another solar max candidate, if at all, until at least May 2024. Both the northern and southern polar fields, as well as the averaged total field, have already reversed polarities.
