Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet on January 5. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 367 and 447 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to unsettled levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 152.7 - increasing 24.8 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 158.39. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 158.71 on June 27, 2023). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 4 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 4.4). Three hour interval K indices: 22111211 (planetary), 21012211 (Boulder), 33001201 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 14 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 292) and in 11 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 194) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13534 [S14W59] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
Region 13536 [N06E10] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.8 @ 02:51 (simultaneous flare in AR 13541), C1.3 @ 19:25 UT
Region 13537 [N18E09] developed slightly in the intermediate spot section. Note that SWPC for reasons unknown decided to split the trailing spots into AR 13542.
Region 13538 [N21W13] lost a few spots and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 02:07 UT
New region 13540 [S17E69] rotated into view on January 4 and was numbered by SWPC the next day. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 07:25, C1.4 @ 09:21, C1.6 @ 09:39, C1.4 @ 22:03 UT

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9273 [S18W43] was quiet and stable.
S9279 [N07E19] was mostly quiet and stable. Note that SWPC has split the spots in this group between ARs 13536 and 13539.
S9291 [N12E49] was quiet and stable.
S9293 [N26E55] was quiet and stable.
S9298 [S15W10] was quiet and stable.
New region S9299 [N23E20] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.
New region S9300 [N18E86] rotated partly into view with a mature spot.
New region S9301 [N35E23] emerged with a tiny spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

January 3-5: No obviously Earth directed CME observed.

Coronal holes

A positive polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1196) will be Earth facing on January 4-6. CH1196 may be too far to the south to cause a geomagnetic disturbance.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on January 6-7. Weak effects from CH1196 are possible on January 7-9.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of January 3, 2024

The relatively low solar activity during the last months of 2023 significantly increased the possibility that solar cycle 25 has already peaked. Whether the first peak in June 2023 will be the actual solar max will not be known for some time. Due to the relatively high solar activity early in 2023 it is unlikely there will be another solar max candidate, if at all, until at least May 2024. Both the northern and southern polar fields, as well as the averaged total field, have already reversed polarities.
