Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on January 4. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 375 and 465 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to active levels.

Solar flux density measured at 18h UT on 2.8 GHz was 147.0 - increasing 14.4 over the previous solar rotation. The measurement at 20h UT was far too low and thus invalid. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 158.40. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 158.71 on June 27, 2023). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 5.5). Three hour interval K indices: 21211113 (planetary), 20111222 (Boulder), 31200144 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 15 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 305) and in 12 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 197) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13534 [S14W46] developed further and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 18:49 UT
Region 13536 [N05E23] still has a magnetic delta structure, however, the region was mostly quiet after the M3 flare early in the day. Further M flares are possible. C1 flares: C1.6 @ 03:42 UT
Region 13537 [N18E21] developed as new flux emerged inside the trailing spot section.
Region 13538 [N21E00] developed further and merged with AR S9292. The region has many small spots. C1 flares: C1.7 @ 09:06 UT

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9273 [S21W24] was quiet and stable.
S9279 [N08E34] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.5 @ 07:28, C1.7 @ 19:49 UT
S9281 [N07W11] reemerged with a tiny spot.
S9290 [N14W41] was quiet and stable.
S9291 [N12E61] was quiet and stable.
New region S9293 [N26E68] rotated into view with tiny spots.
New region S9294 [S21E79] rotated into view with a mature spot.
New region S9295 [S17E81] rotated into view with small spots.
New region S9296 [S13E26] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S9297 [S10E67] rotated into view with a tiny spot.
New region S9298 [S15E03] emerged with tiny spots.

The most recent above 10 MeV proton flux peak was at 25.3 pfu at 00:35 UT on January 5.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

January 2-4: No obviously Earth directed CME observed.

Coronal holes

A positive polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1196) will be Earth facing on January 4-6. CH1196 may be too far to the south to cause a geomagnetic disturbance.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor to very poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on January 5-7. Weak effects from CH1196 are possible on January 7-9.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of January 3, 2024

The relatively low solar activity during the last months of 2023 significantly increased the possibility that solar cycle 25 has already peaked. Whether the first peak in June 2023 will be the actual solar max will not be known for some time. Due to the relatively high solar activity early in 2023 it is unlikely there will be another solar max candidate, if at all, until at least May 2024. Both the northern and southern polar fields, as well as the averaged total field, have already reversed polarities.
