Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet on October 10. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 307 and 378 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded very quiet levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 164.4 - increasing 19.8 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 155.07. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 3 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 2.8). Three hour interval K indices: 12110000 (planetary), 12122320 (Boulder), 11010100 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 18 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 300) and in 14 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 198) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13451 [N16W74] lost spots and appeared to be less complex after the M flares than during the previous day. An M class flare is possible while the region transits the northwest limb. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 03:38, C1.8 @ 23:11 UT
Region 13452 [N08W82] lost all trailing spots and had only tiny leader spots by the end of the day.
Region 13454 [S10W56] was quiet and stable.
Region 13457 [S13W14] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13460 [S11W02] displayed slow decay. There is still a chance of an M class flare. C1 flares: C1.5 @ 04:14. C1.3 @ 04:35, C1.4 @ 08:50 UT
Region 13461 [N11E12] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13462 [N18E39] developed and could produce C flares.
Region 13463 [S18E47] gained spots and was quiet.
New region 13464 [N04E63] emerged near the northeast limb on October 9 and was numbered the next day by SWPC. A magnetic delta structure could be forming in a southern penumbra. C flares are likely and there is a chance of a minor M class flare.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9036 [N26W10] was quiet and stable.
S9037 [S13W65] decayed slowly and quietly.
S9040 [N08E20] was quiet and stable.
S9041 [S28W61] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S9047 [S22W48] emerged with a few spots before noon, then decayed slowly.
New region S9048 [N10E82] rotated into view with a large, mature penumbra.
New region S9049 [S05E11] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S9050 [S13E11] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.
New region S9051 [S23E24] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

October 8-10: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.

Coronal holes

A trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1178) was Earth facing on October 8-9.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is very good. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on October 11-12 due to effects from CH1178. Quiet conditions are likely on October 13-14.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of August 20, 2023

Looking back 6 months, the 365d smoothed values for solar flux and all sunspot numbers with the exception of NOAA's, are all above their solar cycle 24 peak. The first peak of solar cycle 25 is forecast to be between July 7 and 10, 2023 (solar flux on July 7, ISN and STAR 1K and 2K all have that peak on July 9, while NOAA peaks on July 10). This is unlikely to be the final peak of SC25, however, there is a small probability that it is the actual sunspot and solar flux maximum.
