Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on August 2 under the influence of CME effects. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 352 and 493 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 172.9 - increasing 15.3 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 150.42. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 12 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 11.9). Three hour interval K indices: 21134421 (planetary), 22233422 (Boulder), 43114344 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux was at the class C2 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 14 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 261) and in 12 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 179) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13386 [N10W35] decayed slowly. A flare just after 08h UT may have triggered a filament eruption to the south of the region. A faint halo CME was observed after the filament eruption.
Region 13387 [N21W09] was quiet and stable.
Region 13388 [S23W16] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13389 [S10W03] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13390 [S19E08] decayed slowly and was quiet.
Region 13391 [N23E26] was quiet and stable.
Region 13392 [N09E21] developed slowly and quietly.
Region 13393 [N17W01] was quiet and stable.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S8811 [S08W40] reemerged with a tiny spot.
S8813
[S10W65] was very unstable and produced many C and M flares. The region lost most of its magnetic delta structures, however it is still a compact spot group and further M class flaring is likely.
S8814 [N16E38] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S8816 [S22E76] rotated into view with a large mature spot.
New region S8817 [S09E19] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S8818 [N17E55] emerged with a tiny spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

July 31: Several filaments erupted during the latter half of the day. A slow moving partial halo CME was observed starting at 23:00 UT in LASCO C2 imagery. Components of this CME could reach Earth on August 4.
August 1
: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.
August 2: A faint full halo CME was observed after a filament eruption near AR 13386. The CME was visible in LASCO C2 imagery from 09:12 UT. The CME is likely to reach Earth sometime late on August 4 or early on August 5.

Coronal holes

No obvious coronal holes are currently in or near Earth facing positions.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on August 3. The August 1 and 2 CMEs Another CME could reach Earth on August 4 or 5 and cause unsettled to minor storm conditions.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.
