
The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels on August 3. A high speed stream most likely associated with CH1309 was observed reaching ACE after 18h UT. Prior to that solar wind density had been slowly increasing at SOHO. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 373 and 547 km/sec, averaging 434 km/sec (-39 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to active levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels all day.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 146.3 - increasing 28.1 over the previous solar rotation. The 365 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 179.42 (183 days ago). The 81 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 138.2 (41 days ago, this is 43.7% of the total SC25 solar flux range from the max 81 day average peak on September 4, 2024 at 227.3 and an average 81 day flux of 69 at solar minimum). SC25 365d peak: 195.86 on October 13, 2024. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 9 (STAR Ap - based on the average of three hour interval ap indices: 9.1). Three hour interval K indices: 21122342 (planetary), 22112332 (Boulder), 21122342 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 19).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 13 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 254) and in 8 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 148) SDO/HMI images.
AR 14155 [S08W77] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 14161 [S13W17] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14164 [S21W29] was quiet and stable.
AR 14165 [N12E18] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
C1 flares: C1.4 @ 00:48 UT
AR 14166 [N24W75] decayed further and wad quiet.
AR 14167 [N11W50] gained a magnetic delta
configuration before noon, however, that lasted only for some hours. The
region decayed slowly and produced several C flares. C1 flares: C1.4 @
00:08, C1.7 @ 00:18, C1.4 @ 04:55, C1.2 @ 10:53, C1.6 @ 13:33 (simultaneous
flare in AR 14153), C1.5 @ 20:28, C1.4 @ 23:39 UT
AR 14168 [N05E17] displayed no major changes and still has two
significant magnetic delta configurations. Further M class flaring is
possible. C1 flares: C1.7 @ 01:19, C1.4 @ 04:36, C1.2 @ 05:48, C1.6 @ 06:30,
C1.6 @ 12:55, C1.1 @ 19:16, C1.6 @ 19:36, C1.3 @ 20:57 UT
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S11306 [N30E45] was quiet and stable.
S11307 [N18E02] was quiet and stable.
S11309 [N09W23] developed slightly and was quiet.
S11310 [S18E12] was quiet and stable.
New AR S11316 [N22W21] emerged with tiny spots.
New AR S11317 [N22E83] rotated into view with a large spot. C1

A recurrent trans equatorial negative polarity coronal hole (CH1309) was Earth facing on August 1. A recurrent positive polarity coronal hole (CH1310) will likely rotate across the central meridian on August 5-9.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled levels on August 4 due to effects from CH1309. Mostly quiet levels are likely on August 5-7. August 8-12 could see unsettled to minor storm levels due to effects from CH1310.

Sunspot activity has been on a decreasing trend since September
2024 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy).
Compared to the peak of SC25 solar flux has been at a low level in both May
and June 2025. Taking a closer look at the 81 day (3 solar rotations)
average solar flux proxy, its peak was in early September 2024 and had on
May 12 decreased to less than half of the solar cycle flux range.
Subtracting the 81 day average of approximately 69 at solar cycle minimum
from all measurements, the SC25 range is 0 - 158.3.
All 365 day smoothed sunspot numbers peaked on October 11-12, 2024,
very likely making this the peak of SC25 (365 day smoothed peaks: STAR 1K: 236.1, STAR 2K: 364.3, NOAA SN: 156.0, ISN: 163.9). The 365d
smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, just 1.7% below the SC23
peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
