Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels on April 17 due to decaying CME effects. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 411 and 540 km/sec, averaging 473 km/sec (-81 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to active levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 150.7 - decreasing 14.6 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 365d average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 195.36. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50 while SC23 peaked on February 23, 2002 at 198.15. SC25 smoothed 365d solar flux max: 195.86 on October 13, 2024 (subtracting a baseline solar flux level of 65, this is +62.56% compared to the SC24 peak and -1.72% compared to the SC23 peak). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 10 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 9.6). Three hour interval K indices: 34113212 (planetary), 34213312 (Boulder), 24113113 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 18).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 12 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 261) and in 9 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 162) SDO/HMI images.

AR 14056 [S07W73] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14060 [N08W27] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.5 @ 05:05 UT
AR 14061 [N15W69] reemerged a small spot.
AR 14062 [S03E38] displayed some fragmentation of the huge leading penumbra. C1 flares: C1.0 @ 03:16, C1.2 @ 04:25, C1.8 @ 12:31 UT
AR 14063 [N05W06] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14064 [N11E62] had M class flare potential and was mostly quiet.
New AR 14065 [S30E63] rotated into view on April 16 and was numbered the next day by SWPC.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10982 [S21W09] was quiet and stable.
S10991 [N28E07] was quiet and stable.
S10992 [N16E17] was quiet and stable.
New region S10994 [S02E70] emerged with several spots.
New region S10995 [N05E34] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area. C1 flares: C1.5 @ 21:52 UT

A C1.1 flare at 09:06 UT had its origin behind the northeast limb.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

April 15-17: No obviously Earth directed CMEs.

Coronal holes

A negative polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1285) was Earth facing on April 14. A positive polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1286) will rotate across the central meridian on April 17-21.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to active levels on April 18-19 due to effects from CH1285. Effects associated with CH1286 could cause unsettled to minor storm levels on April 20-23.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of April 14, 2025

Sunspot activity has been on a slowly decreasing trend since September 2024 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy). All 365 days smoothed sunspot numbers peaked on October 11-12, 2024, very likely making this the solar max. SDO1K 365d peak: 236.1, SDO2K 365d peak: 364.3, NOAA SN 365d peak: 156.0, ISN 365d peak: 163.5. The 365d smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, only 1.7% below the SC23 peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
