Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to minor storm levels on October 28 due to effects from the October 26 CME. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 408 and 670 km/sec. A solar wind shock was observed at 04:19 UT at SOHO as that Oct.26 CME arrived. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at 227 pfu at the end of the day having peaked at 364 pfu at 13:50 UT.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 255.5 - increasing 10.9 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 182.13. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 182.13 on April 29, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 17 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 16.6). Three hour interval K indices: 35423322 (planetary), 24424322 (Boulder), 55425444 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C3 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 24 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 605) and in 17 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 334) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13863 [S09W62] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 13866 [S13W36] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13868 [S11W19] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13869 [S18E05] was mostly quiet. The leader spot of AR 13872 is approaching the largest trailing spot of AR 13869 and the 2 regions could merge.
AR 13870 [S19W81] was quiet and rotated partly out of view.
AR 13872 [S18E09] was reinterpreted as the previous trailing large spot was moved to AR 13873. The region decayed slowly and quietly. The leader spot could merge with AR 13869 in 1-2 days given the current development.
AR 13873 [S15E18] decayed slowly in the trailing spot section. The previous trailing spot of AR 13872 was included in this spot group after an reinterpretation of the magnetic fields and which regions they most likely belong to.
AR 13874 [N24W18] developed slowly and produced a few C flares.
AR 13875 [N27W01] decayed further and was quiet.
AR 13876 [S05W05] developed and is a compact spot group with major flare potential.
AR 13877 [S15E37] was quiet and stable.
AR 13878 [N15E65] has a magnetic delta configuration in the large trailing penumbra. A major flare is possible.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

October 27-28: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.
October 26: A fast and well defined full halo CME was observed after the closely spaced major flares in AR 13872. The CME reached Earth early on October 28.

Coronal holes

A negative polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1250) was Earth facing on October 24-25. A positive polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1251) could rotate across the central meridian on October 30-31.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is very poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on October 29 due to weakening CME effects. Mostly quiet levels are likely on October 30 - November 1. Quiet to unsettled levels are possible on November 2-3 due to effects from CH1251.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of October 27, 2024

Sunspot activity in October 2024 increased over September and looks to be headed for an SSN near 160. The average solar flux for October will become the second highest for a month during SC25. The above plot now displays the peak in 365d smoothed sunspot numbers in mid October. ISN has a peak on October 15, NOAA SN on October 14 while both the 1K and 2K SDO SN peaked on October 16. Assuming that the average sunspot number from October 2024 until April 14, 2025 becomes 150, we would be looking at a 365 days smoothed sunspot maximum of 164.5 centered on October 15. Should the average sunspot number for that period become 160 we would get a peak near 169.7.
