Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels on September 30 under the decreasing influence of effects from CH1244. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 426 and 553 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels at the end of the day.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 214.2 - decreasing 27.9 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 176.49. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 176.49 on April 1, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 9 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 8.8). Three hour interval K indices: 42111222 (planetary), 42112322 (Boulder), 53112345 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C2 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 22 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 564) and in 21 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 378) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13834 [S18W63] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 13835 [S22W41] decayed significantly leaving no spots with mature penumbra.
AR 13836 [S11W21] decayed slowly and produced a few C flares.
AR 13838 [N16W12] was quiet and stable.
AR 13839 [S14E20] was mostly quiet and stable.
AR 13840 [N12W28] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13841 [N12E18] developed further and could produce M flares.
AR 13842 [S16E32] developed as new flux emerged. The spot group has multiple magnetic delta configurations, the most significant one within the largest penumbra. An X class flare is possible.
AR 13843 [S09E01] gained area and spots. There is a weak magnetic delta configuration in a trailing penumbra. An M class flare is possible.
New AR 13844 [S16E12] emerged on September 29 and was numbered by SWPC the next day. The inversion line runs east-west and further development is likely.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10148 [S20W50] was quiet and stable.
S10152 [N19W32] developed slowly and quietly.
S10160 [S01W25] was quiet and stable.
S10169 [S19E01] was quiet and stable.
S10171 [S04E22] reemerged with tiny spots.
S10172 [S03W05] was quiet and stable.
S10177 [N09E01] was quiet and stable.
S10178 [S14E48] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S10181 [S09W47] emerged with several spots.
New region S10182 [S09E56] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S10183 [S28E72] rotated into view with a mature spot.
New region S10184 [N28E18] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

September 28-30: No obviously Earth directed CMEs observed.

Coronal holes

A recurrent negative polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1244) was in an Earth facing position on September 25-26.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet levels on October 1-3.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejections (2) M and X class flares (3)
     

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of September 7, 2024

Sunspot counts in August 2024 were much higher than during any previous solar cycle 25 month. In comparison only 3 months during solar cycle 23 had higher SSN. Sunspot counts in early September are still high, although lower than in the beginning of August. With at least 5 consecutive months of high sunspot counts the projected peak for the smoothed ISN (365 days smoothing) has increased significantly to above 160 and could easily surpass 170 if the current activity lasts through October. The month of the peak is likely to occur sometime between July and November 2024.
