Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels on October 24 under the influence of a low speed stream associated with CH1248. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 329 and 393 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to active levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was just above background levels at 0.2 pfu at the end of the day. A slow increase in proton levels has been observed since 11h UT on Oct.24 (origin X3 flare in AR 13872).

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 196.6 - increasing 10.6 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 180.96. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 180.96 on April 25, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 12 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 11.6). Three hour interval K indices: 34321222 (planetary), 24312321 (Boulder), 54422144 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C2 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 20 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 406) and in 16 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 254) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13857 [S08W62] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13862 [S19W20] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13863 [S09W09] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 13865 [S22E08] gained a few spots and was quiet.
AR 13866 [S12E16] was mostly quiet and stable with many tiny spots.
AR 13868 [S11E34] was quiet and stable.
AR 13869 [S17E55] produced a few C flares. A major flare is possible.
New AR 13870 [S19W32] emerged on October 22 and decayed on October 24 as it was numbered by SWPC.
New AR 13872 [S17E68] is a complex and compact spot group with obvious major flare potential. The region was the source of the X3 flare early in the day.
New AR 13873 [S11E77] rotated into view revealing a complex spot group with a positive polarity area squeezed between two larger areas of negative magnetic polarity.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10252 [N09W50] decayed slowly and quietly and could become spotless today.
S10261 [N18E08] gained tiny spots and was quiet.
S10270 [N27E47] developed further and was quiet.
New region S10275 [N16E01] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S10276 [S25E17] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S10277 [N03E07] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.
New region S10278 [S23E78] rotated into view with small spots.
New region S10279 [N12E69] was observed with a tiny spot in an old plage area.
New region S10280 [N24E35] emerged with several spots.
New region S10281 [S21W02] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

October 22: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.
October 23: A CME was observed after the C7 flare in AR 13863 peaking at 12:12 UT. The CME could reach Earth on October 26.
October 24: An asymmetric full halo CME was observed after the X3 flare in AR 13872. A solar wind shock could reach Earth on October 26.

Coronal holes

A recurrent negative polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1249) rotated across the central meridian on October 22. A negative polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1250) will be Earth facing on October 24-25.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on October 25-26 in response to the arrival of a high speed stream associated with CH1249. Components of the October 23 CME could reach Earth on October 26 and cause unsettled to major storm conditions.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of October 6, 2024

September 2024 saw a significant decrease in sunspot numbers compared to the previous month, however, activity was still fairly high. The average solar flux for the month ranks as number 3 of all months during SC25. Taking into account that we started seeing high sunspot numbers April 14, 2024, the most likely candidate for solar maximum would be at or just after October 14, 2024. Assuming that the average sunspot number from now until April 14, 2025 becomes 150, we would be looking at a 365 days smoothed sunspot maximum of 164.5 centered on October 14. Should the average sunspot number for that period become 160 we would get a peak near 169.7.
