Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at unsettled to severe storm levels on August 4. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded unsettled to major storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels at the end of the day. The total IMF field increased several times during the day according to ACE data, most likely because of the arrival of CMEs. The first time was gradual after 04:48 UT, while sudden increases were noted at 12:39 and 21:24 UT. The last of these was recorded as a likely solar wind shock at SOHO at 21:29 UT.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 240.8 - increasing 68.5 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 165.77. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 165.77 on February 4, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 51 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 50.6). Three hour interval K indices: 34547744 (planetary), ******** (Boulder), 46456435 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C3 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 14 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 371) and in 13 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 265) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13765 [S08W80] rotated partly out of view and decayed slowly.
AR 13769 [N22W40] produced several C flares.
AR 13770 [N07W83] decayed slowly and rotated to the northwest limb.
AR 13772 [S24W07] lost the magnetic delta configuration, decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 13774 [S07E15] was mostly quiet and stable.
AR 13775 [N18E08] decayed slowly. A minor M class event is possible.
AR 13776 [N09W02] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13777 [S08E32] gained a small magnetic delta near the main penumbra and could produce minor M class flares.
New AR 13779 [N00E24] emerged on August 3 and was number the next day by SWPC.
New AR 13780 [S09E74] rotated partly into view on August 3 with SWPC numbering the spot group the following day. The spot group is huge with the major penumbrae in the north. An X class flare is possible.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9977 [N03W44] was quiet and stable.
S9984 [S14E18] developed slowly and quietly.
S9986 [S28E42] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S9994 [N14E79] rotated into view with a few spots. The spot group appears to have a magnetic delta configuration.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

August 2-4: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.

Coronal holes

A small northern hemisphere positive polarity coronal hole (CH1234) will likely rotate across the central meridian on August 6.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to minor storm levels on August 5 due to CME effects. Quiet levels are likely on August 6-7.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of August 2, 2024

Sunspot counts in July 2024 were the highest we've seen during solar cycle 25. With three consecutive months of high sunspot counts the projected peak for the smoothed ISN (365 days smoothing) has increased significantly to near 150. The month of the peak is currently likely to occur sometime between June and October 2024.
