
The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on April 27, mostly due to effects from CH1216. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels at the end of the day.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 152.6 - increasing 19.0 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 158.71. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 158.71 on October 28, 2023). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 12 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 11.5). Three hour interval K indices: 33213232 (planetary), 22223333 (Boulder), 53125234 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 17 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 293) and in 13 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 188) SDO/HMI images.
Region 13646 [N22W60] decayed slowly and
quietly.
Region 13648 [N17W86] was mostly quiet and stable.
Region 13652 [N14W56] was quiet and stable.
Region 13654 [S07W21] gained a significant magnetic delta structure
in the central spot region (actually 2 separate regions, the trailing spots
of one spot group have merged into the leading penumbra of a another spot
group). Further M class flaring is likely.
Region 13655 [S26W19] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13656 [S11W03] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13658 [S21W76] was quiet and stable.
New region 13660 [N10E66] rotated into view on April 26 and decayed
slowly on April 27 when it was numbered by SWPC.
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9600 [N14W67] decayed slowly and quietly.
S9627 [S15W32] was quiet and stable.
S9635 [S23W68] developed slowly and quietly. SWPC consider these
spots to be part of AR 13658.
S9637 [S09E32] was quiet and stable.
S9641 [N04E13] was quiet and stable.
New region S9646 [S12E19] emerged with a few spots.
New region S9647 [N30E53] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S9648 [S09W41] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S9649 [N04E02] emerged with a tiny spot.

A positive polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1216) was Earth facing on April 23-24. A recurrent negative polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1217) will rotate across the central meridian on April 27-28.

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on April 28 due to effects from CH1216. Quiet to unsettled is likely on April 29. Quiet to minor storm conditions are possible on April 30 - May 1 due to effects from CH1217.

could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed
stream has arrived the color changes to green.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. The big increase in sunspot counts during the April 14-27 interval caused a major uptick in the smoothed SNs and solar flux. It's not yet clear when the next peak will be, anytime between October 28 and December 20, 2023 looks possible. The 365d smoothed solar flux exceeded the June 27 peak on October 28, while the 365d smoothed ISN and NOAA SN both exceeded the June 2023 peak in late October 2023.
