Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on September 8. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 322 and 393 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to unsettled levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 160.9 - increasing 12.6 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 153.71. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 5.5). Three hour interval K indices: 31001211 (planetary), 22012321 (Boulder), 33012331 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 12 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 286) and in 9 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 164) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13418 [N18W52] was mostly quiet and displayed few changes. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 17:35 UT
Region 13421 [N15W48] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 00:45, C1.6 @ 07:47, C1.5 @ 23:27 UT
Region 13422 [N15W28] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13423 [N16E11] gained spots and area and could soon become a compact region. M class flares are possible.
Region 13424 [N17E37] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13425 [N23E45] gained spots and has minor polarity intermixing. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 10:46, C1.1 @ 12:26, C1.3 @ 13:26, C1.2 @ 15:00, C1.4 @ 16:22 UT
Region 13426 [S17E02] decayed slowly and quietly.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S8914 [S07W81] decayed slowly as it rotated to the southwest limb.
S8926 [N23W15] reemerged with tiny spots.
S8936
[S28E45] was quiet and stable.
New region S8939 [S23W33] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S8940 [S21E80] rotated into view with a tiny spot.

AR S8938 at the southwest limb produced a few C1 flares: C1.8 flare at 11:05, C1.2 @ 12:52 UT.
A C1.4 flare at 22:15, a C1.4 flare at 22:35 and a C1.8 flare at 23:42 UT had an origin at the northeast limb.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

September 6: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.
September 7: AR 13425 was the origin of an M2.1 flare at 19:01. A fast CME was observed off the northeast limb. The presence of another CME (most likely backsided) at the same time made it difficult to determine if there was any Earth directed component associated with this event.
September 8: A fast full halo CME with a backsided origin in the northern hemisphere was observed from 11:48 UT in LASCO C2 imagery.

Coronal holes

[Coronal hole history (since October 2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago: 28 days ago 27 days ago 26 days ago]

Northern hemisphere positive polarity coronal holes (CH1169 and CH1170) will rotate across the central meridian on September 8-10. A negative polarity coronal hole (CH1171) in the southern hemisphere will be Earth facing on September 9-10.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be mostly quiet on September 9-10. Effects from CH1169, CH1170 and CH 1171 could cause quiet to active conditions on September 11-12.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejections (2) M and X class flares (3)

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of August 20, 2023

Looking back 6 months, the 365d smoothed values for solar flux and all sunspot numbers with the exception of NOAA's, are all above their solar cycle 24 peak. The first peak of solar cycle 25 is forecast to be between July 7 and 10, 2023 (solar flux on July 7, ISN and STAR 1K and 2K all have that peak on July 9, while NOAA peaks on July 10). This is unlikely to be the final peak of SC25, however, there is a small probability that it is the actual sunspot and solar flux maximum.
