Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet on October 8. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 303 and 358 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to active levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 157.1 - decreasing 19.3 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 155.05. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 5.6). Three hour interval K indices: 22220112 (planetary), 12322323 (Boulder), 44121122 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 16 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 298) and in 13 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 201) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13451 [N16W46] developed in the central spot section and has a magnetic delta structure. Although only a few C flares were recorded, an M flare is possible. C1 flares: C1.9 @ 09:04, C1.3 @ 12:24, C1.4 @ 12:56 UT
Region 13452 [N09W50] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.5 @ 15:25 UT
Region 13454 [S10W28] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13455 [N27W22] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13457 [S11E11] was quiet and stable.
Region 13458 [N15W37] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13459 [N07E32] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13460 [S10E23] developed further, has polarity intermixing and could produce an M class flare. C1 flares: C1.5 @ 10:40, C1.4 @ 22:12 UT
New region 13461 [N12E39] rotated into view on October 5 and was numbered by SWPC 3 days later.
New region 13462 [N21E61] rotated into view on October 6 with SWPC numbering the region 2 days later. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 04:14 UT

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9036 [N28E11] was quiet and stable.
S9037 [S13W38] was quiet and stable.
New region S9038 [S17E75] rotated into view with a mature penumbra.
New region S9039 [N12E06] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S9040 [N09E49] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S9041 [S28W35] emerged with a tiny spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

October 6-8: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.

Coronal holes

A trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1178) will be Earth facing on October 8-10.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is fair to good. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is likely to be quiet on October 9-10. Effects from CH1178 could cause unsettled and active conditions on October 11-12.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of August 20, 2023

Looking back 6 months, the 365d smoothed values for solar flux and all sunspot numbers with the exception of NOAA's, are all above their solar cycle 24 peak. The first peak of solar cycle 25 is forecast to be between July 7 and 10, 2023 (solar flux on July 7, ISN and STAR 1K and 2K all have that peak on July 9, while NOAA peaks on July 10). This is unlikely to be the final peak of SC25, however, there is a small probability that it is the actual sunspot and solar flux maximum.
