Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet on July 19. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 369 and 515 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 188.9 - increasing 15.7 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 147.68. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 3 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 2.8). Three hour interval K indices: 11111111 (planetary), 11212312 (Boulder), 02222222 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux was at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 13 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 301) and in 12 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 211) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13371 [S15W36] was quiet and stable.
Region 13372 [N22W25] decayed slowly in the trailing spot section and produced a few C flares.
Region 13373 [N08E02] decayed slowly in the leading ant intermediate spot sections. Two small magnetic delta structures are still present. A major flare is still possible.
Region 13374 [S08E02] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13376 [N23E16] decayed in the northern spot section and produced a few C flares.
Region 13377 [S09E47] developed intermediate spots. An M flare is possible.
New region 13378 [S27E13] emerged on July 18 with SWPC numbering the group the next day.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S8775 [S27E48] decayed slowly and quietly.
S8779 [N14E71] rotated full into view and has a large leader spot. This and AR S8780 are AR 13379 to SWPC. C1 flares: C1.9 @ 02:09 UT
S8780 [N19E73] was quiet and stable.
S8781 [N15E28] was quiet and stable.
New region S8782 [N12E33] emerged with reversed polarities.
New region S8783 [S25W02] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

July 19: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.
July 17-18: An asymmetrical full halo CME was observed beginning before the peak of a long duration M5 flare in AR 13363 at 00:06 UT on July 18. LASCO C2 observed the CME beginning at 23:36 UT on July 17. Due to the source location near the southwest limb it is uncertain when the CME will reach Earth, the estimate is sometime between late on July 19 and early on July 21.

Coronal holes

A southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1161) was in an Earth facing position on July 18.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to minor storm on July 20-21 due to CME effects. It is still uncertain when the July 17/18 CME will reach Earth. Effects from CH1161 are possible on April 21-22 should the April 17 CME fail to reach Earth..

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.
