Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet on August 9. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 351 and 453 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to active levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 153.4 - decreasing 49.5 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 151.51. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 6.0). Three hour interval K indices: 21212112 (planetary), 222122** (Boulder), 42124343 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 16 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 271) and in 11 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 149) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13391 [N22W65] was quiet and stable.
Region 13392 [N09W76] decayed further and was quiet.
Region 13394 [S22W15] was mostly quiet and stable. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 08:01, C1.4 @ 09:34, C1.4 @ 16:03 UT
Region 13395 [N13W02] developed slowly and quietly.
Region 13396 [N19W19] reemerged with tiny spots.
Region 13397 [N19E22] was quiet and gained a few tiny spots.
Region 13398 [S20W72] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.5 @ 03:45, C1.3 @ 23:03 UT
New region 13399 [S14E38] was first observed with spots on August 6 and was numbered 3 days later by SWPC. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 18:39 UT

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S8821 [N33E15] reemerged with tiny spots.
S8828 [N26W16] was quiet and stable.
S8834 [S15E07] was quiet and stable.
S8837 [N07E38] was quiet and stable.
S8839 [S28E56] was quiet and stable.
S8840 [S28W03] was quiet and stable.
New region S8842 [S01W53] emerged close to the equator as a bipolar group.
New region S8843 [N11W31] emerged with a tiny spot.

AR 13387 produced flares from behind the northwest limb. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 02:49, C1.3 @ 03:13 UT.
AR S8831 at the southwest limb produced a C1.3 flare at 12:42 UT.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

August 7: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed. A backsided full halo CME was observed after the X1.5 flare in AR 13386.
August 8-9: No obviously Earth direction CMEs were observed.

Coronal holes

A poorly defined trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1163) was Earth facing on August 7-8.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on August 10-11 due to weak effects from CH1163. Quiet conditions are likely on August 12-13.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.
