Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on August 4. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 320 and 410 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to major storm levels. A weak solar wind shock was observed at 06:51 UT at SOHO, the likely arrival of the July 31/August 1 CME. Another solar wind shock was observed at DSCOVR at 02:09 on August 5, the arrival of the August 2 CME. The geomagnetic field has since been at minor to major storm levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 170.8 - increasing 10.3 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 150.77. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 13 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 13.3). Three hour interval K indices: 01122444 (planetary), ******** (Boulder), 01233446 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C2 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 14 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 291) and in 14 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 200) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13386 [N10W62] developed further with the distance decreasing between the large leader spot and the growing trailing spot. A major flare is possible.
Region 13387 [N21W35] was mostly quiet and stable.
Region 13388 [S23W43] was mostly quiet and stable.
Region 13389 [S11W25] was quiet and stable.
Region 13390 [S21W04] was quiet and stable.
Region 13391 [N23W01] was quiet and stable.
Region 13392 [N09W08] was mostly quiet and stable.
Region 13393 [N17W30] was quiet and stable.
Region 13394 [S22E49] was mostly quiet and stable. C1 flares: C1.9 @ 10:53, C1.9 @ 16:51 UT
Region 13395 [N14E65] was mostly quiet and stable.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S8814 [N17E17] developed slowly and quietly.
S8817 [S09W07] decayed slowly and was quiet.
New region S8823 [S20W04] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S8824 [S26E11] emerged with tiny spots.

AR S8813 at the southwest limb produced a C1.9 flare at 11:22, a C1.9 flare at 14:04, a C1.9 flare at 16:44 and a C1.8 at 18:21 UT.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

August 2: A faint full halo CME was observed after a filament eruption near AR 13386. The CME was visible in LASCO C2 imagery from 09:12 UT. The CME reached Earth early on August 5.
August 3: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.
August 4: An asymmetrical full halo CME was observed after the long duration M1.9 event in AR 13386 peaking at 04:24 UT. The CME could reach Earth on August 7.

Coronal holes

No obvious coronal holes are currently in or near Earth facing positions.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be unsettled to major storm on August 5 due to CME effects, isolated severe storm intervals are possible. Quiet to unsettled is likely on August 6. Another CME will likely cause quiet to active conditions on August 7.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.
