
The geomagnetic field was at unsettled to severe storm levels on April 3. A solar wind shock caused by the April 1/2 CME was observed reaching at SOHO at 14:59 UT. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 612 and 865 km/sec, averaging 699 km/sec (+83 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes was at active to severe storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux peaked at 6.5 pfu at 04:05 UT and declined slowly for the remainder of the day recording 3.0 pfu at the end of the UT day.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 135.8 - increasing 0.4 over the previous solar rotation.
The 365 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 144.12 (183 days ago). The 81 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 135.9 (41 days ago, this is 42.2% of the total SC25 solar flux range from the max 81 day average peak on September 4, 2024 at 227.3 and an average 81 day flux of 69 at solar minimum). SC25 365d peak: 195.9 on October 13, 2024.
The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 47 (STAR Ap - based on the average of three hour interval ap indices: 47.4). Three hour interval K indices: 43544756 (planetary), 33543654 (Boulder), 45545677 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class B8 level (GOES 19).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 9 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 177) and in 7 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 110) SDO/HMI images.
AR 14403 [N16W53] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14404 [N13W32] was quiet and stable.
AR 14405 [S29W17] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 14406 [N07W27] was quiet and stable.
AR 14407 [N19W28] reemerged with tiny spots.
AR 14408 [N08W01] was quiet and stable.
AR 14409 [N02W03] developed early in the day. After noon decay was
observed in the trailing spot section. There is still a significant magnetic
delta configuration in the leading spot section and further M class flaring
is likely as long as that delta exists. A major M7.5 flare was recorded

New AR 14411 [S06E47] rotated into view on April 1 and was noticed by
SWPC 2 days later.

April 1, 3: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in
available coronagraph imagery.
April 2: A halo CME was observed in LASCO C3 imagery early in the day
following a large filament eruption near AR 14403 just before midnight on
April 1. A shock from this CME was observed at 14:59 UT at SOHO.

A recurrent trans equatorial negative polarity coronal hole (CH1353) was in an Earth facing position on March 30 - April 1. A recurrent northern hemisphere negative polarity coronal hole will rotate across the central meridian on April 2-4 and could cause a weak disturbance on April 5-6.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to minor storm levels on April 4 due to combined CME effects and effects associated with CH1353. Effects from CH1354 could cause quiet to active levels on April 5-6.

Solar activity appears to have exited the solar max phase as of February
2026 with a strong decrease in the number of sunspots observed. The northern
polar field has weakened considerably over the last months, and although
there is a chance the the field could recover over the next 1-2 years, there
is an increasing chance that solar cycle 26 will be very weak. The southern
polar field is not impressive either, however, a southern polar coronal hole
has formed early in 2026 and appears to be growing.
All 365 day smoothed sunspot numbers reached a maximum on October 11-12, 2024.
This became the peak of SC25 (365 day smoothed peaks: STAR 1K: 236.1, STAR 2K: 364.3, NOAA SN: 156.0, ISN: 163.9),
while the 365d
smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, just 1.7% below the SC23
peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
