
The geomagnetic field was at unsettled to minor storm levels on September 29. A disturbance with an unknown source was in progress most of the day. The phi angle was in a negative sector until 16h UT at ACE, then swung into a positive sector until 01h on September 30. Bz was at -16 nT at 04h UT on September and the geomagnetic field is currently at major storm levels. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 373 and 432 km/sec, averaging 401 km/sec (-21 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded unsettled to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels all day.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was
186.4 -
decreasing 1.0
over the previous solar rotation.
The 365 day average solar flux at 1
AU was 168.93 (183 days ago). The 81 day average solar flux at 1 AU was
155.1 (41 days ago, this is 54.4% of the total SC25 solar flux range from the max 81
day average peak on September 4, 2024 at 227.3 and an average 81 day flux of
69 at solar minimum).
SC25 365d peak:
195.9 on October 13, 2024.
The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 28 (STAR Ap - based on the average of three hour interval ap indices: 27.5). Three hour interval K indices: 22344554 (planetary), 23344442 (Boulder), 43344555 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class C2 level (GOES 19).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 14 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 347) and in 13 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 240) SDO/HMI images.
AR 14226 [S10W48] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14228 [N05W37] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14230 [S10W26] developed further and gained a magnetic delta
configuration. A major flare is possible. C1 flares: C1.9 @ 17:44, C1.9 @
18:13 UT
AR 14232 [N03E35] gained spots and area. The magnetic delta
configuration disappeared. There's significant polarity intermixing. Spots
to the north of the main penumbra area being considered for a split. M
flares are still likely.
AR 14233 [N18E37] decayed significantly and simplified. Flare
activity decreased a lot compared to the previous days.
AR 14234 [S27W05] was quiet and stable.
AR 14235 [N27E37] decayed and was mostly quiet.
AR 14236 [N09E27] gained area and spots while losing the magnetic
delta configuration. The level of polarity intermixing decreased to minor. M
flares are likely. C1 flares: C1.7 @ 00:22, C1.8 @ 00:37, C1.9 @ 06:43 UT
New AR 14237 [N15W07] emerged on September 28 and was numbered by
SWPC the next day.
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S11463 [S16W53] decayed slowly and produced a few C flares.
S11476 [S14W28] developed further. This is probably AR 14238,
however, the match with imprecise SWPC data is not very good.
New AR S11479 [N09W05] emerged with a few spots.
New AR S11480 [N17E81] rotated into view with small and tiny spots.
New AR S11481 [S16E14] emerged with tiny spots.

A small recurrent southern hemisphere negative polarity coronal hole (CH1318) rotated across the central meridian on September 24. A small northern hemisphere negative polarity coronal hole (CH1319) was Earth facing on September 25. A trans equatorial positive polarity coronal hole (CH1320) will rotate across the central meridian on September 29-30. A recurrent southern hemisphere positive polarity coronal hole (CH1321) will be Earth facing on September 29-October 3.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be at unsettled to severe storm levels on September 30 and quiet to unsettled on October 1. October 2-6 could see quiet to minor storm levels due to effects from CH1320/CH1321.

Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. Sunspot activity has been on a decreasing trend since September
2024 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy).
Compared to the peak of SC25 solar flux has been at a low level in both May
and June 2025. Taking a closer look at the 81 day (3 solar rotations)
average solar flux proxy, its peak was in early September 2024 and had on
May 12 decreased to less than half of the solar cycle flux range.
Subtracting the 81 day average of approximately 69 at solar cycle minimum
from all measurements, the SC25 range is 0 - 158.3.
All 365 day smoothed sunspot numbers peaked on October 11-12, 2024,
very likely making this the peak of SC25 (365 day smoothed peaks: STAR 1K: 236.1, STAR 2K: 364.3, NOAA SN: 156.0, ISN: 163.9). The 365d
smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, just 1.7% below the SC23
peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
