Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at minor to major storm levels on May 29 under the influence of a high speed stream associated with CH1297 and CH1298. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 465 and 802 km/sec, averaging 691 km/sec (+138 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded minor to severe storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 144.8 - decreasing 7.5 over the previous solar rotation. The 365 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 189.97 (183 days ago). SC25 peak: 195.86 on October 13, 2024 (subtracting a baseline solar flux level of 65, this is +62.6% compared to the SC24 peak and -1.7% compared to the SC23 peak). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 60 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 60.5). Three hour interval K indices: 65556565 (planetary), 65554543 (Boulder), 67555655 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B8 level (GOES 19).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 11 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 263) and in 9 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 168) SDO/HMI images.

AR 14092 [S13W67] gained a few spots and was quiet.
AR 14094 [N20W58] was quiet and stable.
AR 14096 [N07W34] was quiet and stable.
AR 14099 [S13E16] has a magnetic delta configuration and could produce a major flare. The region was mostly quiet.
AR 14100 [N08E27] lost area as the largest penumbrae split into smaller penumbrae. The region produced several C flares, most of them low level. C1 flares: C1.1 @ 08:41, C1.2 @ 09:42, C1.1 @ 12:26, C1.4 @ 18:39, C1.4 @ 18:53, C1.2 @ 19:32, C1.6 @ 00:02 (on May 30) UT
AR 14101 [N04E13] developed as new flux emerged.
AR 14102 [S20W24] decayed slowly and quietly.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S11103 [S06E17] reemerged tiny spots.
New region S11107 [N06E57] emerged with tiny spots. C1 flares: C1.2 @ 10:00 UT
New region S11108 [S19W01] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.
New region S11109 [N27W47] emerged with a tiny spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

A southern hemisphere negative polarity coronal hole (CH1297) rotated across the central meridian on May 26-27. A recurrent negative polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1298) will be Earth facing on May 27-31.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at unsettled to major storm levels on May 30 and quiet to active levels on May 31-June 2 due to effects from CH1298.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of May 13, 2025

Sunspot activity has been on a slowly decreasing trend since September 2024 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy). The decline has become more obvious during the first half of May 2025 with solar flux on May 12 at its lowest level since April 4, 2024. The solar max phase of solar cycle 25 was considerably shorter than that of the most recent solar cycles.

All 365 days smoothed sunspot numbers peaked on October 11-12, 2024
, very likely making this the peak of SC25 (STAR 1K 365d peak: 236.1, STAR 2K 365d peak: 364.3, NOAA SN 365d peak: 156.0, ISN 365d peak: 163.6). The 365d smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, just 1.7% below the SC23 peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
