
The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels on May 28 under the influence of a high speed stream associated with CH1296. A sudden increase in solar wind density as well as a decrease in solar wind speed was observed at 20:54 UT at SOHO. This may be a reverse shock related to the trailing CIR of CH1296. Solar wind speed began to increase again just before midnight, and the CIR associated with CH1297 caused a strong increase in geomagnetic activity with minor to major storm levels recorded early on May 29. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 397 and 667 km/sec, averaging 553 km/sec (+91 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded unsettled to major storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 144.3 - decreasing 8.0 over the previous solar rotation. The 365 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 190.04 (183 days ago). SC25 peak: 195.86 on October 13, 2024 (subtracting a baseline solar flux level of 65, this is +62.6% compared to the SC24 peak and -1.7% compared to the SC23 peak). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 16 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 16.1). Three hour interval K indices: 44231333 (planetary), 36332433 (Boulder), 46333454 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class B7 level (GOES 19).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 12 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 223) and in 10 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 150) SDO/HMI images.
AR 14092 [S13W53] was quiet and stable.
AR 14094 [N19W46] was quiet and stable.
AR 14096 [N07W21] was quiet and stable.
AR 14097 [S14W22] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14099 [S13E29] has a magnetic delta
configuration and could produce a major flare.

AR 14101 [N03E27] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14102 [S21W11] decayed slowly and quietly.
New AR 14103 [S17W02] emerged on May 27 and decayed on May 28 when it
was numbered by SWPC.
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S11096 [S22W29] reemerged with a tiny spot.
New region S11104 [N14W27] emerged with tiny
spots.
New region S11105 [N30W48] emerged with a tiny spot.

A southern hemisphere negative polarity coronal hole (CH1297) rotated across the central meridian on May 26-27. A recurrent negative polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1298) will be Earth facing on May 27-30.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be at unsettled to major storm levels on May 29-30 first due to effects from CH1297 and then from CH1298. Quiet to active levels are likely on May 31-June 2 due to effects from CH1298.

Sunspot activity has been on a slowly decreasing trend since September
2024 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy). The
decline has become more obvious during the first half of May 2025 with solar
flux on May 12 at its lowest level since April 4, 2024. The solar max phase
of solar cycle 25 was considerably shorter than that of the most recent
solar cycles.
All 365 days smoothed sunspot numbers peaked on October 11-12, 2024,
very likely making this the peak of SC25 (STAR 1K 365d peak: 236.1, STAR 2K
365d peak: 364.3, NOAA SN 365d peak: 156.0, ISN 365d peak: 163.6). The 365d
smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, just 1.7% below the SC23
peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
