Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to minor storm levels on June 4. Yet another disturbance began after 03:30 UT as the total field of the interplanetary magnetic field increased ranging between 6 and 9 nT until after 13:30 UT at ACE. At that time a brief increase to the 12-14 nT interval occurred. Solar wind speed increased after 10 UT and peaked above 800 km/sec near 18:30 UT. After 16h UT the phi angle was in a positive sector. The source of the disturbance is uncertain, with the most likely source being a CME. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 555 and 816 km/sec, averaging 663 km/sec (+46 |km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to major storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at 0.4 pfu at the end of the day.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 130.6 - decreasing 17.9 over the previous solar rotation. The 365 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 189.35 (183 days ago). SC25 peak: 195.86 on October 13, 2024 (subtracting a baseline solar flux level of 65, this is +62.6% compared to the SC24 peak and -1.7% compared to the SC23 peak). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 26 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 25.8). Three hour interval K indices: 13345543 (planetary), 14445533 (Boulder), 25555565 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B7 level (GOES 19).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 11 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 203) and in 10 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 153) SDO/HMI images.

AR 14099 [S13W63] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.0 @ 16:46 UT

AR 14101 [N03W72] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14104 [N08W28] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14105 [S14E62] decayed slowly and displayed much less activity than during the previous days. C1 flares: C1.0 @ 04:37 UT
New AR 14106 [N12E12] emerged on June 3 and was numbered the next day by SWPC as slow development continued.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S11113 [S12W06] was quiet and stable.
S11115 [S11E09] was quiet and stable.
S11116 [N10E33] was quiet and stable.
New region S11126 [S16E05] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S11127 [N14W29] emerged with tiny spots.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

June 2, 4: No obviously Earth directed CMEs.
June 3: A filament eruption in the northern hemisphere began early in the day with a positive polarity coronal hole forming after 17h UT. The associated slow moving CME may have an Earth direct component and could reach Earth on June 6-7.

A negative polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1299) will be Earth facing on June 2-5.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to active levels on June 5-7 due to effects from CH1299, maybe with some effects from the June 3 CME on June 6-7.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of May 13, 2025

Sunspot activity has been on a slowly decreasing trend since September 2024 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy). The decline has become more obvious during the first half of May 2025 with solar flux on May 12 at its lowest level since April 4, 2024. The solar max phase of solar cycle 25 was considerably shorter than that of the most recent solar cycles.

All 365 days smoothed sunspot numbers peaked on October 11-12, 2024
, very likely making this the peak of SC25 (STAR 1K 365d peak: 236.1, STAR 2K 365d peak: 364.3, NOAA SN 365d peak: 156.0, ISN 365d peak: 163.6). The 365d smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, just 1.7% below the SC23 peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
