
The geomagnetic field was at unsettled to active levels on February 1 under the influence of effects from CH1268. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 383 and 739 km/sec, averaging 558 km/sec (+208 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to severe storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels all day.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 187.9 - increasing 7.9 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 192.92. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50 while SC23 peaked on February 23, 2002 at 198.15. Current SC25 peak: 192.92 on August 3, 2024 (given a base solar flux level of 65, this is +58.91% compared to the SC24 peak and -3.93% compared to the SC23 peak). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 24 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 23.6). Three hour interval K indices: 44344444 (planetary), 42435543 (Boulder), 54424575 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 18).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 17 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 462) and in 14 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 273) SDO/HMI images.
AR 13974 [S16W06] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13976 [N13E15] decayed significantly after noon. While many C
flares were recorded during the first half of the day, only a few low level
C flares occurred after noon. C1 flares: C1.9 @ 04:44, C1.8 @ 17:10, C1.8 @
23:01 UT
AR 13977 [N20E14] decayed with little mature penumbra remaining. The
spot group produced several C flares and the only M flare of the day. C1
flares: C1.9 @ 14:44, C1.6 @ 16:05, C1.7 @ 16:47, C1.6 @ 18:54, C1.6 @
19:13, C1.9 @ 19:58 UT
AR 13978 [N12E27] still has a small magnetic delta configuration in a
northern penumbra. An M class flare is possible. C1 flares: C1.8 @ 10:10,
C1.6 @ 10:57, C1.6 @ 17:36 UT
AR 13979 [S09W53] was quiet and stable.
AR 13980 [S10E35] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13981 [N05E44] was quiet and stable.
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10749 [S20W34] reemerged with tiny spots.
S10754 [N22E34] was quiet and stable.
S10755 [N16E27] developed slowly and was mostly quiet.
S10756 [S12E26] decayed slowly and quietly.
S10759 [N07E36] developed further gaining spots and area.
S10760 [N02W27] was quiet and stable.
S10761 [S23E11] was quiet and stable.
New region S10762 [N10E38] emerged with tiny
spots.
New region S10763 [N19E62] emerged with a tiny spot.

January 31-February 1: No obviously Earth directed CMEs.
January 30: A large filament eruption was observed beginning in
SDO/AIA imagery at 13:18 UT. The majority of the filament was in the
southeastern hemisphere extending towards the center of the visible disk. A
partial halo CME was observed and could reach Earth on February 2.

A large recurrent positive polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1268) will be Earth facing on January 28 - February 1.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be unsettled to active levels on February 2 and quiet to unsettled on February 3-5 due to effects from CH1268.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could
reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived
the color changes to green.

Sunspot activity increased again during the second half of December 2024, and this will be the eighth consecutive month with average solar flux above 180. The average solar flux at 1 AU since May 1, 2024 is 205. There is an increasing chance solar cycle 25 could have a higher 1 year solar flux average than solar cycle 23. The above plot displays a projected peak for the ISN 365d smoothed sunspot number on October 12, 2024. All the other smoothed sunspot numbers as well as the smoothed 365d solar flux have projected peaks October 12-15. A sudden decrease in activity during the first months of 2025 could move the SC25 max to sometime between July and October 2024.
