
The geomagnetic field was at unsettled to major storm levels on August 9 under the influence of effects associated with CH1310. A further increase in solar wind speed was observed after 16h UT, most likely due to the high speed stream from CH1311 arriving and contributing to the current disturbance. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 442 and 620 km/sec, averaging 522 km/sec (+137 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded active to major storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels all day.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 139.7 - increasing 11.5 over the previous solar rotation. The 365 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 177.25 (183 days ago). The 81 day average solar flux at 1 AU was 140.6 (41 days ago, this is 45.3% of the total SC25 solar flux range from the max 81 day average peak on September 4, 2024 at 227.3 and an average 81 day flux of 69 at solar minimum). SC25 365d peak: 195.86 on October 13, 2024. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 43 (STAR Ap - based on the average of three hour interval ap indices: 42.9). Three hour interval K indices: 55555643 (planetary), 54654523 (Boulder), 66445554 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 19).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 13 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 243) and in 11 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 168) SDO/HMI images.
AR 14165 [N12W62] was quiet and stable.
AR 14168 [N05W68] decayed slowly losing area, spots and magnetic
delta configurations. The region continued to produce many C and M flares.
C1 flares: C1.8 @ 05:05 UT
AR 14169 [N22E07] was quiet and stable.
AR 14171 [N18E27] was quiet and stable.
AR 14172 [N08E09] gained many small spots as new flux emerged in the
trailing spot section. There's minor polarity intermixing and an M flare is
possible.
AR 14173 [S18W69] developed early in the day, then decayed again. C1
flares: C1.7 @ 14:29, C1.6 @ 22:00 UT
AR 14174 [S08W43] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14175 [N11E48] was quiet and stable.
AR 14176 [N25E31] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14177 [N04E49] was quiet and stable.
New AR 14178 [N09W18] emerged on August 7 and was noticed 2 days
later by SWPC as the region continued to develop. There were many tiny and
small spots by the end of the day.
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S11306 [N27W32] was quiet and stable.
New AR S11333 [S11E81] rotated partly into view with tiny spots.

An extensive southern hemisphere recurrent positive polarity coronal hole (CH1310) will rotate across the central meridian on August 5-12. A northern hemisphere positive polarity coronal hole (CH1311) rotated across the central meridian on August 7-9.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to active levels on August 10-14 with a chance of minor storm intervals due to effects from CH1310 and CH1311.

Sunspot activity has been on a decreasing trend since September
2024 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy).
Compared to the peak of SC25 solar flux has been at a low level in both May
and June 2025. Taking a closer look at the 81 day (3 solar rotations)
average solar flux proxy, its peak was in early September 2024 and had on
May 12 decreased to less than half of the solar cycle flux range.
Subtracting the 81 day average of approximately 69 at solar cycle minimum
from all measurements, the SC25 range is 0 - 158.3.
All 365 day smoothed sunspot numbers peaked on October 11-12, 2024,
very likely making this the peak of SC25 (365 day smoothed peaks: STAR 1K: 236.1, STAR 2K: 364.3, NOAA SN: 156.0, ISN: 163.9). The 365d
smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, just 1.7% below the SC23
peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
