Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet levels on April 25. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 436 and 590 km/sec, averaging 499 km/sec (-18 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to active levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 164.0 - increasing 7.4 over the previous solar rotation. The 365 days average solar flux at 1 AU was 194.30 (183 days ago). SC25 peak: 195.86 on October 13, 2024 (subtracting a baseline solar flux level of 65, this is +62.6% compared to the SC24 peak and -1.7% compared to the SC23 peak). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 4 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 4.4). Three hour interval K indices: 11111122 (planetary), 11112322 (Boulder), 10111114 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B8 level (GOES 19).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 21 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 396) and in 18 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 269) SDO/HMI images.

AR 14062 [S03W71] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14064 [N10W46] decayed significantly losing area and spots. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 03:05 UT
AR 14065 [S31W38] was quiet and stable.
AR 14067 [S03W39] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14068 [S25E11] decayed and lost all mature penumbra.
AR 14069 [S08W33] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14070 [S12W02] decayed quickly and quietly.
AR 14072 [S18E36] was quiet and stable.
AR 14073 [N12E25] developed slowly and produced low level C flares. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 06:56, C1.4 @ 13:33, C1.3 @ 20:03, C1.3 @ 22:51 UT
New AR 14074 [S19W59] was first observed with spots on April 19, then became spotless before reemerging on April 23. SWPC numbered the region 2 days afterwards.
New AR 14075 [S10E47] emerged on April 23 and was numbered by SWPC 2 days later. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 08:09 UT
New AR 14076 [N06E58] rotated into view on April 23 with a large spot and received its NOAA number 2 days later.
New AR 14077 [S17E60] rotated into view on April 24 and produced a few low level C flares. NOAA numbered the region the next day. C1 flares: C1.2 @ 11:34, C1.3 @ 11:39 UT

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10999 [N16W05] gained tiny spots and was mostly quiet.
S11009 [S09E19] was quiet and stable.
S11010 [N25W26] reemerged with tiny spots.
S11012 [S14W15] was quiet and stable.
S11022 [N23E28] was quiet and stable.
New region S11023 [N17W44] emerged with tiny spots. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 21:41 UT

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

Coronal holes

A very large positive polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1286) rotated across the central meridian on April 17-25. A small northern hemisphere positive polarity coronal hole (CH1287) was Earth facing on April 22. Another northern hemisphere positive polarity coronal hole (CH1288) was Earth facing on April 24.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to active levels on April 26-28 due to effects from CH1286/CH1288.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of April 14, 2025

Sunspot activity has been on a slowly decreasing trend since September 2024 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy). All 365 days smoothed sunspot numbers peaked on October 11-12, 2024, very likely making this the solar max. SDO1K 365d peak: 236.1, SDO2K 365d peak: 364.4, NOAA SN 365d peak: 156.0, ISN 365d peak: 163.6. The 365d smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, only 1.7% below the SC23 peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
