Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at unsettled to minor storm levels on April 21 due to effects from CH1286. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 436 and 737 km/sec, averaging 607 km/sec (+185 km/sec compared to the previous day). The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded unsettled to major storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 163.0 - increasing 6.9 over the previous solar rotation. The 365 days average solar flux at 1 AU: 194.71 (183 days ago). SC25 peak: 195.86 on October 13, 2024 (subtracting a baseline solar flux level of 65, this is +62.6% compared to the SC24 peak and -1.7% compared to the SC23 peak). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 37 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 37.4). Three hour interval K indices: 44555453 (planetary), 45445442 (Boulder), 55445563 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 19).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 17 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 361) and in 15 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 232) SDO/HMI images.

AR 14060 [N07W82] decayed slowly with only tiny spots remaining.
AR 14062 [S03W16] decayed slowly. The region was mostly quiet even though it produced the only M flare of the day.
AR 14063 [N04W63] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.7 @ 14:10, C1.7 @ 14:21, C1.5 @ 22:51 UT
AR 14064 [N10E08] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 14065 [S31E12] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 14067 [S03E15] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 20:36 UT
New AR 14068 [S26E63] rotated into view on April 20 and was numbered by SWPC the next day.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10992 [N15W28] was quiet and stable.
S10997 [S12W50] developed slowly and quietly.
S10998 [S14W54] developed slowly and quietly.
S10999 [N17E47] was mostly quiet and stable. C1 flares: C1.5 @ 03:27 UT.
S11003 [S18W14] was quiet and stable.
S11004 [S12E53] emerged with tiny spots. C1 flares: C1.6 @ 21:13 UT
S11006 [S08E23] developed slowly and quietly.
New region S11007 [N10E26] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S11008 [S18W44] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S11009 [S05E76] rotated into view with a small spot. A C9.9 flare was recorded at 01:00 UT on April 22.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

April 19-21: No obviously Earth directed CMEs.

Coronal holes

A very large positive polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1286) will rotate across the central meridian on April 17-22. A small northern hemisphere positive polarity coronal hole (CH1287) will likely become Earth facing on April 22.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to to active levels on April 22-25 due to effects from CH1286. Effects from CH1287 could add to the disturbance on April 25-26.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of April 14, 2025

Sunspot activity has been on a slowly decreasing trend since September 2024 (using the average solar flux over 3 solar rotations as a proxy). All 365 days smoothed sunspot numbers peaked on October 11-12, 2024, very likely making this the solar max. SDO1K 365d peak: 236.1, SDO2K 365d peak: 364.4, NOAA SN 365d peak: 156.0, ISN 365d peak: 163.5. The 365d smoothed solar flux peaked on October 13, 2024, only 1.7% below the SC23 peak, and 62.6% above the SC24 peak.
