Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels on September 15 under the influence a high speed stream associated with CH1241. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 448 and 567 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded unsettled to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at 3.6 pfu at the end of the day.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 172.8 - decreasing 66.3 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 175.95. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 175.95 on March 17, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 18 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 17.8). Three hour interval K indices: 24444432 (planetary), 15423433 (Boulder), 45444353 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 16 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 325) and in 12 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 196) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13814 [N15W66] was quiet and decayed slowly.
AR 13822 [N13W56] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13824 [S04W27] gained a few spots and produced several C flares. C1 flares: C1.9 @ 04:59 UT
AR 13825 [S16E37] decayed fairly quickly losing all magnetic delta configurations. There is still a chance of M class flaring. C1 flares: C1.9 @ 17:44, C1.7 @ 22:56 UT
AR 13826 [S28W29] decayed slowly and quietly.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10114 [N12W19] decayed slowly and quietly.
S10115 [S15E21] was quiet and stable.
S10117 [N18E01] was quiet and stable.
New region S10122 [S10E28] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S10124 [N15E26] was observed with tiny spots in an old plage area.
New region S10125 [S26E78] rotated into view before noon with a mature spot.
New region S10126 [N16W25] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S10127 [N08E63] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S10128 [N06E22] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S10129 [S02E15] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S10130 [S19W04] was observed with a tiny spot in an old plage area.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

September 15: No obviously Earth directed CMEs observed.
September 14
: A full halo CME was observed after the X4.5 flare in AR 13825 peaking at 15:29 UT. While the fastest parts of the CME are not headed towards Earth, there is a chance of a fairly strong disturbance starting during the latter half of September 16. This CME will likely arrive just after the September 13 CME.
September 13
: A partial halo CME was observed after the M2.9 flare in AR 13814 peaking at 08:37 UT. This CME could reach Earth on September 16.

Coronal holes

A northern hemisphere positive polarity coronal hole (CH1242) was in an Earth facing position on September 14.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to major storm levels on September 16-17 due to CME effects. Quiet to unsettled levels are likely on September 18-19.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of September 7, 2024

Sunspot counts in August 2024 were much higher than during any previous solar cycle 25 month. In comparison only 3 months during solar cycle 23 had higher SSN. Sunspot counts in early September are still high, although lower than in the beginning of August. With at least 5 consecutive months of high sunspot counts the projected peak for the smoothed ISN (365 days smoothing) has increased significantly to above 160 and could easily surpass 170 if the current activity lasts through October. The month of the peak is likely to occur sometime between July and November 2024.
