Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to unsettled levels on October 17 due to effects from CH1247. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 383 and 464 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 173.5 - increasing 19.5 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 180.01. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 180.01 on April 18, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 8 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 7.5). Three hour interval K indices: 33210122 (planetary), 33311322 (Boulder), 44201154 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 17 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 359) and in 16 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 249) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13852 [S12W65] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 13854 [S06W58] still has a magnetic delta configuration in a small leading penumbra. The delta was the origin of the largest flare of the day, an M2.4 event peaking at 05:05 UT. C1 flares: C1.8 @ 13:45, C1.8 @ 13:53 UT
AR 13856 [N10W21] has two magnetic delta configurations, one in an intermediate section penumbra, another in the largest trailing penumbra. C1 flares: C1.8 @ 01:11 UT
AR 13857 [S07E27] developed slowly and was polarity intermixing.
AR 13858 [S15E22] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13859 [S12W00] developed gaining area and spots. An M flare is possible. C1 flares: C1.7 @ 18:36, C1.9 @ 23:17 UT
New AR 13860 [S07E15] emerged on October 16 and developed further the next day when the spot group was numbered by SWPC. A small magnetic delta configuration formed. C1 flares: C1.9 @ 17:13 UT

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10213 [S11W43] was quiet and stable.
S10231 [N15W19] was mostly quiet and stable. C1 flares: C1.8 @ 04:42 UT
S10234 [S06W12] reemerged with tiny spots.
S10240 [N27E09] reemerged with tiny spots.
S10241 [N07E22] reemerged with tiny spots.
S10242 [S31E20] reemerged with tiny spots.
S10243 [S02W61] decayed slowly and quietly.
S10247 [S24W26] was quiet and stable.
New region S10248 [N22W12] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S10249 [S08E82] rotated into view with a mature spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

October 15-17: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed. Several halo CMEs were observed in LASCO imagery early on October 17, however, they probably have a backsided origin.

Coronal holes

A large positive polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1247) rotated across the central meridian on October 14-16. Another positive polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1248) will probably become Earth facing on October 18-19.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to active levels on October 18-20 while effects from CH1248 could extend that activity level until October 22.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of October 6, 2024

September 2024 saw a significant decrease in sunspot numbers compared to the previous month, however, activity was still fairly high. The average solar flux for the month ranks as number 3 of all months during SC25. Taking into account that we started seeing high sunspot numbers April 14, 2024, the most likely candidate for solar maximum would be at or just after October 14, 2024. Assuming that the average sunspot number from now until April 14, 2025 becomes 150, we would be looking at a 365 days smoothed sunspot maximum of 164.5 centered on October 14. Should the average sunspot number for that period become 160 we would get a peak near 169.7.
