
The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels on May 3 due to weakening CME effects. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels at the end of the day.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 156.0 - increasing 33.1 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 158.46. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 158.71 on October 28, 2023). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 9 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 9.0). Three hour interval K indices: 43120122 (planetary), 32222322 (Boulder), 54221132 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class C2 level (GOES 16).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 15 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 336) and in 13 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 239) SDO/HMI images.
Region 13660 [N10W17] was quiet and stable.
Region 13661 [N23E12] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13662 [N29W29] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13663 [N26W03] gained area and spots. The magnetic delta
configuration in the central spot section is unusually strong and further
major flares are likely, there's even a chance of an X10+ flare. A small
magnetic delta formed in a northern trailing penumbra. An M9.1 major flare
was observed at 06:19 UT on May 4. C1 flares: C1.9 @ 01:11 UT
Region 13664 [S19E40] developed further gaining small magnetic delta
configurations. A major flare is possible.
Region 13665 [S05E58] was quiet and stable.
New region 13666 [N07E16] emerged quickly on May 2 and was numbered
the next day by SWPC as growth persisted. A minor M class flare is possible.
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9637 [S15W33] was quiet and stable.
S9660 [N09E30] developed slowly and quietly.
S9661 [S25E02] was quiet and stable.
S9667 [S09E69] was quiet and stable.
New region S9669 [S17E52] emerged with a few spots.
New region S9670 [N04E54] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S9671 [N27E83] rotated partly into
view with a mature spot.
New region S9672 [S33E57] emerged with a tiny spot.

May 3: A partial halo CME was observed after the X1.6 flare in AR
13663. The CME could reach Earth between late on May 5 and noon on May 6. A
partial halo CME was observed in LASCO imagary after a filament eruption in
the eastern hemisphere (across the equator) that began at 20:17 UT in
SDO/AIA imagery and was centered on AR S9660. This CME could reach Earth on
May 6.
May 2: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.
May 1: A partial halo CME was observed after a very long duration
event to the south of AR 13654. Components of this CME could reach Earth on
May 4.

A positive polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1218) was Earth facing on April 30. A positive polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1219) was Earth facing on May 1-2. A positive polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1220) will rotate across the central meridian on May 3.

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active conditions on May 4-5 due to effects related to CH1219. The May 1 CME could reach Earth on May 4 and cause unsettled to minor storm conditions. Effects from CH1220 will likely cause quiet to active conditions on May 6. CMEs observed on May 3 could reach Earth on May 5-6 and cause unsettled to major storm conditions.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

The big increase in sunspot counts during the April 14-27 interval caused a major uptick in the smoothed SNs and solar flux. It's not yet clear when the next peak will be, anytime between October 28 and December 20, 2023 looks possible. The 365d smoothed solar flux exceeded the June 27 peak on October 28, while the 365d smoothed ISN and NOAA SN both exceeded the June 2023 peak in late October 2023. It should be noted that the current peak using 13-month smoothing is still in June 2023.
