Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet levels on July 17. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to unsettled levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels at the end of the day.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 223.8 - increasing 20.5 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 164.01. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 164.01 on January 17, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 5 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 4.6). Three hour interval K indices: 11212111 (planetary), ******** (Boulder), 12223332 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C2 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 25 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 583) and in 22 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 365) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13742 [S25W32] was quiet and stable.
AR 13743 [S10W43] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 13744 [N16W28] was mostly quiet and stable.
AR 13745 [S20W36] was mostly quiet and stable.
AR 13748 [N16W11] was quiet and stable.
AR 13749 [S33E18] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13750 [S19E10] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13751 [S08E26] developed slowly and could produce a major flare.
AR 13752 [N22E29] was quiet and stable.
AR 13753 [N12W49] decayed and produced several M flares.
AR 13754 [N25E44] was quiet and stable.
AR 13755 [N02E48] developed slowly and quietly.
AR 13756 [S17E54] was quiet and stable.
AR 13757 [N18E61] was quiet and stable.
New AR 13758 [S08W38] emerged on July 12 and was numbered 5 days later by SWPC. The region produced a major flare in conjunction with AR 13743
New AR 13759 [S07E04] emerged on July 14 and received its NOAA number 2 days later.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9884 [N16W78] decayed slowly and quietly.
S9904 [N19E09] was quiet and stable.
S9907 [N22E42] was quiet and stable.
S9913 [S13W14]  was quiet and stable.
S9915 [N17W42] was quiet and stable.
S9916 [S15W50] was quiet and stable.
S9917 [N19E37] decayed slowly and quietly.
S9918 [N06E13] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S9920 [N14E12] emerged with tiny spots.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

July 15: No obviously Earth directed CMEs observed.
July 16: The M1.9 flare in AR 13744 peaking at 22:06 UT was associated with a moderate type II radio sweep and apparently a faint partial halo CME. Components of this CME could reach Earth on July 19-20.
July 17: Type II and IV radio sweeps hint at the possibility of CMEs after M5 and M3 flares in ARs 13743 and 13758. Any effects from these could reach Earth on July 20-21.

Coronal holes

A large recurrent negative polarity coronal hole (CH1232) in the northern hemisphere rotated across the central meridian on July 14-17.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on July 18-19 due to possible effects from CH1232 and quiet to active on July 19-21 due to CME effects.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of July 5, 2024

Sunspot counts in June 2024 were almost at the level of May 2024 and the second highest month during solar cycle 25. Looking at the projected activity for the remainder of this year, solar max now looks likely to occur between May and October 2024. A big decrease in sunspot formation in July 2024 and over the next months could change the projected maximum to earlier in 2024 or even to December 2023.
