
The geomagnetic field was at quiet to unsettled levels on July 16 under the influence of weak CME effects. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels at the end of the day.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 241.9 - increasing 45.9 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 163.94. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 163.94 on January 16, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 8 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 8.4). Three hour interval K indices: 32211322 (planetary), ******** (Boulder), 54112223 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class C2 level (GOES 16).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 26 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 600) and in 24 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 399) SDO/HMI images.
AR 13738 [S08W83]
produced the only major flare of the day and is rotating over the southwest
limb.
AR 13742 [S25W19] was mostly quiet and stable.
AR 13743 [S09W31] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 13744 [N16W15] decayed further and was unstable.
AR 13745 [S20W22] developed slowly and was mostly quiet.
AR 13748 [N15E01] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13749 [S33E30] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13750 [S20E27] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13751 [S08E39] developed further and the magnetic delta configuration
enlargened. M flares are possible.
AR 13752 [N23E43] was quiet and stable.
AR 13753 [N12W35] developed further and produced M flares.
AR 13754 [N25E57] was quiet and stable.
New AR 13755 [N02E62] rotated into view on July 15 and was numbered
the next day by SWPC.
New AR 13756 [S17E67] rotated into view on July 15 and received its
NOAA number the following day.
New AR 13757 [N18E74] rotated partly into view on July 15 with SWPC
numbering the region the next day.
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9884 [N15W63] developed slowly and quietly.
S9895 [S08W23] developed further and \was quiet.
S9904 [N18E20] reemerged with tiny spots.
S9907 [N22E55] decayed slowly and quietly.
S9913 [S17W02] was quiet and stable.
S9914 [S07E17] was quiet and stable.
New region S9915 [N17W30] emerged with a few spots.
New region S9916 [S14W35] was split off from AR 13743 and developed
slowly.
New region S9917 [N19E49] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S9918 [N07E26] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S9919 [N25W59] emerged with a tiny spot.

July 14-15: No obviously Earth directed CMEs observed.
July 16: The M1.9 flare in AR 13744 peaking at 22:06 UT was
associated with a moderate type II radio sweep and apparently a faint
partial halo CME. Components of this CME could reach Earth on July 19-20.

A large recurrent negative polarity coronal hole (CH1232) in the northern hemisphere will be rotating across the central meridian on July 14-16.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on July 16-18 with a chance of active intervals on July 17-18 due to possible effects from CH1232.

1) Effects from a coronal hole
could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed
stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.
Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Sunspot counts in June 2024 were almost at the level of May 2024 and the second highest month during solar cycle 25. Looking at the projected activity for the remainder of this year, solar max now looks likely to occur between May and October 2024. A big decrease in sunspot formation in July 2024 and over the next months could change the projected maximum to earlier in 2024 or even to December 2023.
