
The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels on December 31. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 308 and 509 km/sec. A solar wind shock was observed at SOHO at 15:58 UT, the arrival of the first of the December 29 CMEs. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at 0.3 pfu at the end of the day, just above background levels.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 217.6 - increasing 42.9 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 190.69. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50 while SC23 peaked on February 23, 2002 at 198.15. Current SC25 peak: 190.69 on July 2, 2024 (given a base solar flux level of 65, this is +56.13% compared to the SC24 peak and -5.60% compared to the SC23 peak). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 12 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 12.3). Three hour interval K indices: 11211444 (planetary), 02222533 (Boulder), 01010454 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class C3 level (GOES 18).
At the time of counting spots, spots were observed in 18 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 397) and in 15 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 289) images.
AR 13935 [S19W50] was quiet and stable.
AR 13936 [N12W72] decayed slowly and became less active. The region
could still produce M flares.
AR 13937 [S12W40] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13938 [N18W26] developed slowly and produced a few flares. The
region has minor polarity intermixing.
AR 13939 [S17W07] developed and has significant polarity intermixing.
AR 13940 [S05W10] was quiet and stable.
AR 13941 [S06W02] gained spots in the intermediate spot section and
has polarity intermixing.
AR 13943 [S15E60] was quiet and stable.
AR 13944 [S14E33] emerged in the trailing polarity section of AR
13942 on December 30. SWPC replaced AR 13942 with AR 13944 as there was no
separation between the regions.
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10514 [S14W77] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S10526 [N05E07] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S10527 [S12W27] emerged with a few spots.
New region S10528 [S10E72] rotated into view with mature spots.
New region S10529 [N06E59] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S10530 [N19E28] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S10531 [S18E63] was split off from AR 13943.
New region S10532 [S13E80] rotated into view with mature spots.
New region S10533 [S06E29] was observed with tiny spots in an old
plage area.

December 30-31: No obviously Earth directed CMEs.
December 29: Several CMEs were observed during the day, none of them
very impressive. A partial halo CME was observed in LASCO imagery following
an M2 flare in AR 13939 at 04:34 UT and a subsequent filament eruption. This
CME could reached Earth during the latter half of December 31. Another partial
halo CME appears to have been associated with an M3.3 flare in AR 13939 at
17:08 UT and could reach Earth on January 1.

A positive polarity southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1264) will rotate into an Earth facing position on December 31-January 1. A positive polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1265) will like rotate across the central meridian on January 1-3.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to minor storm on January 1 due to CME effects and quiet to unsettled on January 2. High speed streams from CH1264 and CH1265 could cause quiet to active levels on January 3-5.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.
Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Sunspot activity increased again during the second half of December 2024, and this will be the eighth consecutive month with average solar flux above 180. The average solar flux at 1 AU since May 1, 2024 is 205. There is an increasing chance solar cycle 25 could have a higher 1 year solar flux average than solar cycle 23. The above plot displays a projected peak for the ISN 365d smoothed sunspot numbers on October 12, 2024. All the other smoothed sunspot number as well as the smoothed 365d solar flux have projected peaks October 12-15. A sudden decrease in activity during the first months of 2025 could move the SC25 max to sometime between July and October 2024.
