Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to unsettled levels on August 22. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels at the end of the day. A weak disturbance, likely associated with CH1236, was in progress all day.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 230.6 - increasing 63.4 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 170.99. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 170.99 on February 22, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 8 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 8.4). Three hour interval K indices: 32222212 (planetary), 24233423 (Boulder), 43332325 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C2 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 20 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 408) and in 17 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 286) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13790 [S11W20] was mostly quiet and still has the potential to produce a major flare.
AR 13792 [S17W05] was quiet and stable.
AR 13793 [N22W18] gained a few spots and was quiet.
AR 13794 [N18W38] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13796 [S02E14] produced several C and M flares and has major flare potential.
AR 13798 [N06E35] was quiet and stable.
AR 13799 [S10E49] developed slowly and could produce M flares.
New AR 13800 [S27E29] emerged on August 20 and was numbered 2 days later by SWPC.
New AR 13801 [N07E66] rotated into view on August 21 and received its NOAA number the following day.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S10031 [N25W07] reemerged with a tiny spot.
S10033 [S09E28] was quiet and stable.
S10039 [N29W06] was quiet and stable.
S10041 [N27W26] was quiet and stable.

New region S10046 [N13E59] emerged with tiny spots.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

August 20-22: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed. Multiple farsided CMEs were observed on August 20 and 22.

Coronal holes

A positive polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1236) was in an Earth facing position on August 18-19. Another positive polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1237) rotated across the central meridian on August 20.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to active levels on August 23 due to effects from CH1236 and CH1237. Quiet to unsettled is likely on August 24-25.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of August 12, 2024

Sunspot counts in July 2024 were the highest we've seen for a single month during solar cycle 25. The first part of August has seen very high sunspot counts, and there more than a remote possibility that we'll see activity in August approaching the most active months of solar cycle 23. With at least 4 consecutive months of high sunspot counts the projected peak for the smoothed ISN (365 days smoothing) has increased significantly to above 160. The month of the peak is currently likely to occur sometime between July and November 2024.
