Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to unsettled levels on August 3. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. The above 10 MeV proton flux was at background levels at the end of the day.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 244.6 - increasing 78.6 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 165.59. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50. Current SC25 peak: 165.59 on February 3, 2024). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 8 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 7.9). Three hour interval K indices: 22122223 (planetary), ******** (Boulder), 34124435 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C3 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 21 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 439) and in 18 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 300) SDO/HMI images.

AR 13764 [S02W83] rotated quietly to the limb.
AR 13765 [S10W70] decayed further and still has a magnetic delta configuration. M class flares are likely.
AR 13766 [S05W81] decayed slowly and quietly.
AR 13769 [N22W27] was quiet and stable.
AR 13770 [N07W70] decayed slowly and lost the magnetic delta configuration.
AR 13772 [S24E07] matured further and has a magnetic delta configuration in a small central penumbra. The number of spots decreased as slow decay was observed in the trailing and intermediate  spot section. Further M class flares are likely.
AR 13774 [S07E28] decayed further and lost the magnetic delta configurations. M class flares are still possible.
AR 13775 [N18E22] decayed slowly and has a magnetic delta configuration in the intermediate spot section. A minor M class event is possible.
AR 13776 [N09E09] developed slowly and quietly.
AR 13777 [S08E47] developed and could produce minor M class flares.
AR 13778 [S18W63] decayed slowly and quietly.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S9977 [N04W32] reemerged with a few spots.
S9984 [S13E31] developed and could produce C flares.
New region S9986 [S28E57] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S9987 [N04E02] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S9988 [N23W47] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S9989 [S12E80] rotated into view with a few spots.
New region S9990 [S08E85] rotated into view with large spots. A major flare is possible.
New region S9991 [N00E39] emerged with tiny spots to the northeast of AR 13774.
New region S9992 [N18E72] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S9993 [N24W54] emerged with a tiny spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

August 1: An asymmetrical full halo CME was observed after an M8.2 flare in AR 13768 at 07:09 UT. Components of this CME could reach Earth on August 4.
August 2-3
: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.

Coronal holes

No obvious coronal holes are currently in or near Earth facing positions.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to minor storm levels on August 4-5 due to effects from the August 1 CME. Quiet levels are likely on August 6.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of August 2, 2024

Sunspot counts in July 2024 were the highest we've seen during solar cycle 25. With three consecutive months of high sunspot counts the projected peak for the smoothed ISN (365 days smoothing) has increased significantly to near 150. The month of the peak is currently likely to occur sometime between June and October 2024.
