Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to minor storm on September 18. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 432 and 599 km/sec. A solar wind shock was recorded at 12:57 UT as the September 16 CME arrived earlier than expected. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to major storm levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 154.5 - increasing 3.6 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 154.14. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 29 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 29.4). Three hour interval K indices: 44324554 (planetary), 43214544 (Boulder), 65324645 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 15 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 262) and in 13 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 181) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13429 [N11W52] decayed further and was mostly quiet. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 12:59 UT
Region 13433 [N28W13] was quiet and stable.
Region 13434 [N09W40] was quiet and stable.
Region 13435 [N09E58] produced several low level C flares. The region has M class flare potential and was the source of an M1.1 flare at 03:55 UT on September 19. C1 flares: C1.2 @ 01:32, C1.4 @ 02:17, C1.4 @ 03:00, C1.4 @ 07:41, C1.2 @ 11:27 UT
Region 13436 [N19W36] developed quickly and produced many C flares. M class flaring will become likely if development continues. C1 flares: C1.5 @ 14:13, C1.8 @ 15:54, C1.9 @ 18:20, C1.9 @ 18:31, C1.8 @ 20:15 UT
New region 13437 [S18W15] emerged on September 17 and was numbered by SWPC the next day as the region developed further. C1 flares: C1.7 @ 21:54
New region 13438 [N10E48] was split off from AR 13435.
New region 13439 [S23E58] rotated into view on September 17 and was numbered by SWPC the following day.
New region 13440 [N18E75] rotated partly into view on September 17 and got its NOAA number the next day.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S8964 [N23W79] matured and was quiet. Note that SWPC moved AR 13425 to this region when AR 13425 became spotless on Sept.18. C1 flares: C1.6 @ 09:35, C1.3 @ 10:26 UT
S8966 [S08E36] reemerged with tiny spots.
S8968 [N17W05] was quiet and stable.
New region S8974 [S08E80] rotated into view with a mature spot.
New region S8975 [N29E12] emerged with tiny spots.
New region S8976 [N24E54] emerged with a tiny spot.

A C1.5 flare was recorded at 01:04 UT from a source behind the southwest limb.
AR 13425 was the apparent source of a C1.4 flare at 02:03 and a C1.5 flare at 13:38 UT

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

September 17-18: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.
September 16: A CME was observed just after 09h UT due to an extensive filament eruption across the central meridian. The CME reached Earth after 13h UT on September 18.

Coronal holes

Several coronal holes formed after the extensive filament eruption on September 16. CH1173 is a positive polarity trans equatorial coronal hole and was Earth facing on September 16. Positive polarity coronal hole CH1174 formed in the northern hemisphere on September 16 and rotated across the central meridian on September 16-17. A negative polarity trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1174) will be Earth facing on September 19.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor to very poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to major storm on September 19 due to the September 16 CME. Quiet to active levels are likely on September 20-21 due to effects from CH1173 and CH1174. On September 22 a high speed stream from CH1175 will likely arrive and cause quiet to active conditions.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of August 20, 2023

Looking back 6 months, the 365d smoothed values for solar flux and all sunspot numbers with the exception of NOAA's, are all above their solar cycle 24 peak. The first peak of solar cycle 25 is forecast to be between July 7 and 10, 2023 (solar flux on July 7, ISN and STAR 1K and 2K all have that peak on July 9, while NOAA peaks on July 10). This is unlikely to be the final peak of SC25, however, there is a small probability that it is the actual sunspot and solar flux maximum.
