The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on March 21, mostly due to weak effects from CH1135. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 375 and 542 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. DSCOVR data indicated that another disturbance arrived a 20:20 UT resulting in active geomagnetic conditions early on March 22.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 151.6 - decreasing 0.3 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 137.91). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 7 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 7.0). Three hour interval K indices: 31221212 (planetary), 51232323 (Boulder), 50121324 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class B6 level (GOES 16).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 10 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 203) and in 9 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 130) SDO/HMI images.
Region 13256 [S21E22] decayed slowly and was
mostly quietly. C1 flares: C1.2 @ 04:06, C1.1 @ 17:14 UT
Region 13257 [S27E42] produced several flares due to the small magnetic delta in the
northwestern part of the largest spot. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 04:38, C1.5 @ 22:13, C1.7 @ 23:57

Region 13258 [N19E07] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares:
C1.7 @ 10:29 UT
Region 13259 [S16E43] was mostly quiet and stable.
Region 13260 [N23E45] was quiet and stable.
New region 13261 [S22W64] emerged on March 20 and was numbered by
SWPC the next day as the region began to decay.
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC:
S8370 [N27W01] was mostly quiet and stable.
S8383 [N20E65] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S8385 [S19E82] rotated into view with a mature spot.
New region S8386 [N19W16] emerged with tiny spots after noon.
AR 13252 produced a C1.4 flare at 08:12, a C1.8 flare at 09:22 and a C1.9 flare at 12:09 UT while at the northwest limb.

March 21: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were
observed.
March 19-20: A large filament eruption covering an area just west of
the central meridian and from the southernmost part of the northern
hemisphere well into the southern hemisphere was observed beginning late on
March 19 peaking early on March 20. A slow and faint partial halo CME was
observed during the same time span, but any connection between these events
is uncertain. If they are associated the CME could reach Earth on March 23.
A fast partial halo CME was observed after the C4 flare in AR S8370. While
the main part of the ejecta is not headed towards Earth, there is a chance
that weak components of the CME will reach Earth on March 23.

A large southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1136) was Earth facing on March 20-21. A trans equatorial coronal hole (CH1137) will likely rotate across the central meridian on March 23, CH1137 could be an extension of CH1136.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.
Quiet to active geomagnetic conditions are likely on March 22. Quiet to minor storm conditions are possible on March 23-24 due to effects from CH1136 and CME effects.

1) Effects from a coronal hole
could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed
stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.
Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.
