Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on August 24, another weak disturbance associated with a high speed coronal hole began after noon. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 360 and 536 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to major storm levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 144.1 - decreasing 24.1 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 153.10. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 7 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 6.6). Three hour interval K indices: 01102333 (planetary), 11113422 (Boulder), 00103366 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B6 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 12 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 193) and in 9 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 116) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13405 [N10W60] produced a few C flares and decayed slowly. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 18:04 UT
Region 13411 [N14W41] was quiet and stable.
Region 13412 [N30W05] was quiet and stable.
Region 13413 [N09E30] produced a few flares and decayed slightly losing several spots. C1 flares: C1.4 @ 06:45, C1.4 @ 11:20, C1.3 @ 12:16 UT
Region 13414 [S11E00] was quiet and stable.
Region 13415 [S10E49] displayed few changes and could produce a major flare. The region is compact and easily the most complex on the visible disk. An M1.4 flare was recorded at 01:09 UT on August 25. C1 flares: C1.3 @ 11:41, C1.2 @ 14:58, C1.0 @ 15:54 UT

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S8883 [N20W25] was quiet and stable.
S8884 [S13W74] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S8891 [S20W53] emerged as a bipolar region before noon, then decayed slowly.
New region S8892 [S19E86] rotated into view with a mature spot.
New region S8893 [S22E69] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S8894 [N20E50] was observed with a tiny spot in an old plage area.

AR 13403 behind the northwest limb produced a C1.4 flare at 19:30 UT

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

August 23-24: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.
August 22: A faint CME was observed after a filament eruption in the southwest quadrant early in the day. This CME could reach Earth on August 25 or 26.

Coronal holes

A southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1166) rotated across the central meridian on August 23.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on August 25 due to coronal hole effects. The CME observed early on July 22 could reach Earth on August 25 or 26 and cause some unsettled and active intervals. On August 26-27 there is a chance of unsettled intervals due to effects from CH1166.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.

Solar cycles 24-25

Smoothed SF and sunspot numbers

Update on the progress of solar cycle 25 as of August 20, 2023

Looking back 6 months, the 365d smoothed values for solar flux and all sunspot numbers with the exception of NOAA's, are all above their solar cycle 24 peak. The first peak of solar cycle 25 is projected to be between July 7 and 10, 2023 (solar flux on July 7, ISN and STAR 1K and 2K all have that peak on July 9, while NOAA peaks on July 10). This is unlikely to be the final peak of SC25, there is only a small chance that it is the actual sunspot and solar flux maximum.
