
The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on August 17. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 297 and 393 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels. A disturbance began early on August 18, the source is uncertain but may be due to effects from CH1165.
Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 151.9 - decreasing 20.9 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 152.24. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 6.1). Three hour interval K indices: 32202211 (planetary), 32311422 (Boulder), 52213231 (Andenes).
The background x-ray flux is at the class B8 level (GOES 16).
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 15 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 269) and in 12 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 170) SDO/HMI images.
Region 13397 [N20W84] decayed slowly and was
mostly quiet.
Region 13403 [N26W21] was mostly quiet and stable. C1 flares: C1.2 @
06:13, C1.7 @ 07:36, C1.3 @ 23:40 UT
Region 13404 [S09E21] was mostly quiet and stable.
Region 13405 [N10E35] displayed no significant changes and was mostly
quiet.
Region 13406 [S17W47] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13407 [S18W03] developed slowly and quietly.
Region 13408 [S19W18] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13409 [N21W28] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet. C1 flares:
C1.2 @ 05:43 UT
New region 13411 [N13E49] rotated into view on August 15 and was
numbered 2 days later by SWPC. C1 flares: C1.2 @ 15:25 UT
Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted
differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S8848 [N22W37] decayed slowly and quietly.
S8850 [N24W05] was quiet and stable.
S8869 [N12E11] decayed slowly and quietly.
S8872 [S25W02] was quiet and stable.
New region S8874 [N31E84] rotated into view with a mature spot.
New region S8875 [S15E17] was observed with tiny spots in an old
plage area.
An active region behind the
southeast limb produced a few flares including a C1.3 flare at 14:00, a C1.2
flare at 15:46, C1.0 flare at 16:11and a C1.2 flare at 16:34 UT
An active region behind the northwest limb produced a C1.1 flare at 06:45 UT

A southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1165) rotated across the central meridian on August 13-14.

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on August 17 due to effects from CH1165. Quiet conditions are likely on August 18-19.

1) Effects from a coronal hole
could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed
stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.
Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.
