Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was very quiet on August 6. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 300 and 390 km/sec. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to unsettled levels. A solar wind discontinuity was observed at DSCOVR at 00:10 on August 7, most likely the arrival of the August 4 CME.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 173.5 - decreasing 17.1 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 151.11. In comparison SC24 peaked on June 28, 2014 at 145.50). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 2 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 2.1). Three hour interval K indices: 01000111 (planetary), 11211210 (Boulder), 10100223 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 16 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 273) and in 14 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 188) SDO/HMI images.

Region 13386 [N10W88] rotated mostly out of view. The region produced another major flare (M5.5 at 18:40 UT). C1 flares: C1.9 @ 12:31 UT
Region 13387 [N19W61] gained spots and produced several C flares. The magnetic delta disappeared. C1 flares: C1.6 @ 13:46, C1.7 @ 14:02 UT
Region 13388 [S23W70] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13391 [N23W26] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 13392 [N09W34] was mostly quiet and stable.
Region 13394 [S22E24] gained spots while the main penumbra lost some area.
Region 13395 [N14E38] was quiet and stable.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC/USAF:
S8814 [N18W09] was quiet and stable.
S8823 [S20W29] decayed slowly and quietly.
S8828 [N22E16] developed slightly and was quiet.
New region S8831 [S12W48] emerged with tiny spots. C1 flare: C1.9 @ 14:10 UT

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

August 4: An asymmetrical full halo CME was observed after the long duration M1.9 event in AR 13386 peaking at 04:24 UT. The CME could reach Earth on August 7.
August 5: An asymmetrical full halo CME was observed after the long duration M1.6 event in AR 13386 peaking at 07:18 UT. The CME could reach Earth on August 8. Another asymmetrical full halo CME was observed after the X1.6 event in AR 13386 peaking at 22:21 UT. This CME could also reach Earth on August 8.
August 6: An asymmetrical partial halo CME was observed after the M5.5 flare in AR 13386.

Coronal holes

No obvious coronal holes are currently in or near Earth facing positions.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on August 7-9 with a chance of minor storm intervals due to effects from the August 4 and 5 CMEs.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.
