Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was unsettled to major storm on April 20 under the influence of a high speed stream from CH801. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 492 and 609 km/s.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 80.7 (increasing 8.4 over the last solar rotation). The average 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 76.4. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 26 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 25.6). Three hour interval K indices: 46443333 (planetary), 45553222 (Boulder)

The background x-ray flux is at the class B1 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 6 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 89) and in 4 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 53) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12651 [N11E45] lost the magnetic delta and was mostly quiet.
New region 12652 [N12E58] rotated into view on April 19 and was numbered by SWPC the next day.

Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S5650 [N24E33] reemerged with small spots.
New region S5654 [N17E46] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S5655 [S10E87] began to rotate into view, a single spot was visible late in the day.
New region S5656 [S07W11] emerged with a small spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

April 18-20: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in available LASCO imagery.

Coronal holes

A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH802) will rotate across the central meridian on April 20-23.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on April 21-22. Late on April 22 or early on April 23 a strong disturbance related to CH802 is likely to start with active to major storm conditions possible.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
