Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on October 17 due to effects from CH767. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 702 and 771 km/s.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 76.2 (decreasing 8.3 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 88.2. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 18 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 18.0). Three hour interval K indices: 33442334 (planetary), 33432333 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class A7 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 3 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 48) and 3 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 44) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12600 [N11W72] was quiet and stable.
Region 12602 [N06W13] developed slowly late in the day.

Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
New region S5470 [N05E10] emerged with tiny spots early in the day and decayed after noon.

C2+ flares:

Magnitude Peak time (UT) Location AR Recorded by Comment
C4.2 00:38 behind SW limb 12599 GOES15

Flare activity (SDO/EVE/ESP XRS-B proxy)

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

October 15-17: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in available LASCO imagery.

Coronal holes

[Coronal hole history (since October 2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago: 28 days ago 27 days ago 26 days ago]

A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH767) rotated across the central meridian on October 12-15. A small trans equatorial coronal hole (CH768) will likely rotate into an Earth facing position on October 19.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on October 18 due to effects from CH767. Quiet conditions are likely on October 19-21. Quiet to active conditions could occur on October 22-23 due to effects from a decaying trans equatorial coronal hole (CH768).

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejection (2) M and X class flares (3)

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
