Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on July 16 under the decreasing influence of a high speed stream associated with the westernmost extension of CH746. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 447 and 604 km/s.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 106.6 (increasing 21.4 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 89.4. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 7 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 6.8). Three hour interval K indices: 31113121 (planetary), 31123222 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B3 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 5 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 103) and 5 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 77) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12564 [N09W23] was quiet and stable.
Region 12565 [N05E07] was quiet and stable.
Region 12566 [N10E04] was quiet and stable.
Region 12567 [N05E16] developed significantly slower than over the previous 2 days and lost the magnetic delta. C flares are likely and an M class flare possible.
Region 12568 [S16E26] was quiet and stable.

Flare activity (SDO/EVE/ESP XRS-B proxy)

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

July 14-16: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in available LASCO imagery.

Coronal holes

[Coronal hole history (since October 2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago: 28 days ago 27 days ago 26 days ago]

A recurrent northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH750) will likely rotate into an Earth facing position on July 18-19.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on July 17-20 becoming quiet to unsettled on July 21-22 due to effects from CH750.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejection (2) M and X class flares (3)

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
