Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was very quiet on September 7. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 315 and 376 km/s.

Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 98.5 (decreasing 11.9 over the last solar rotation). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 3 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 2.8). Three hour interval K indices: 01110010 (planetary), 11112211 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux was at the class B2 level.

At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 5 spotted active regions (in 2K resolution SDO images).

Region 11836 [N10W76] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11838 [S04E43] gained a few spots, however, the only penumbra containing umbrae decayed.

Spotted regions not numbered by SWPC:
S2658 [S13E50] gained trailing spots and was quiet.
S2661 [S20E21] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S2663 [N31W44] emerged with penumbra spots.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

September 5-7: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.

A recurrent coronal hole (CH584) in the northern hemisphere was in an Earth facing position on September 7.  CH584 is the western part of what used to be a large coronal hole and has slowly decreased in size after rotating into view. The eastern part of that large coronal hole, now CH585, will likely rotate into an Earth facing position on September 9-11.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on September 8-9. On September 10-11 there's a chance of quiet to unsettled conditions due to effects from CH584. Effects from CH585 could cause quiet to minor storm conditions on September 12-14.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
