The geomagnetic field was very quiet on January 24. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 274 and 301 km/s. A solar sector change was noted just before 01 UTC on January 25.
Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 103.4 (decreasing 3.4 over the last solar rotation). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 1 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 1.0). Three hour interval K indices: 11000000 (planetary), 11010100 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux was at the class B1 level.
At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 7 spotted active regions (in 2K resolution SDO images).
Region 11658 [S12W86] was quiet and stable.
Region 11660 [N13W57] lost some area in the leader spots while several trailing spots merged into one penumbra.
Region 11661 [N13E33] gained a few spots and was quiet.
Region 11662 [N28E53] was quiet and stable.
Spotted regions not numbered by SWPC:
S2184 [N18W23] reemerged with a tiny spot.
New region S2191 [N14E19] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S2192 [S28W54] emerged with tiny spots.
January 22, 24: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO
January 23: A partial halo CME was observed after a filament eruption in the northeast quadrant (to the west of AR 11662). This CME could reach Earth on January 26 or 27.
Coronal hole history (since October

A coronal hole (CH550) in the southern hemisphere was in an Earth facing position on January 21-22, however, CH550 closed on January 22.
The above coronal hole map is based on a method where coronal holes are detected automatically. While the method may need some fine tuning, it has significant advantages over detecting coronal holes manually. The main improvement is the ability to detect coronal holes at and just beyond the solar limbs. Early results using this method for SDO images over a span of several weeks indicate a good match between coronal holes observed over the visible disk and their extent and position at the east and west limbs. Note that the polar coronal holes are easily detected using this method, the extent and intensity of both CHs are consistent with other data sources.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on January 25 due to weak coronal hole effects. On January 26 or 27 the CME observed on January 23 could reach Earth and cause some unsettled and active intervals.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue (blue-green) is positive.
